Favorite Ring of Steps attachment strap?

I notice there's several different options for the EWO OCB strap. One with metal buckle, one with separate buckle, one with quick release buckle - and one that says boat winch. Which is the most secure option and easiest to setup in the dark?

This is the version I prefer.

Treehopper makes a long handle ocb buckle. I have no experience with it though.

I use this for my camera arm. It's nice and tight, easy to cam over.

I’ve used the ratchet strap that comes with the Bullman setups, and while it can get them really, really, tight, I just don’t like the bulk, the weight, and the noise of it.

The trick with the OCB is that there is definitely a learning curve to get them set right. A lot of it depends on the type of bark. Trees with hard, thin bark will require you to actually not set them quite so tight, or you won’t get it crammed over. It IS possible to break one of those buckles. I did it one time trying to really tighten down a set on a hard barked tree. Big ol “ping” sound and sent that buckle flying. I carry a spare one now because of that. On a softer or thicker barked tree you might have to cam it over twice while tightening the strap a bit in between.

In my opinion the one one to have is the strap with the flat hook and the buckle separately. No threading the strap each time.

Also, the type of steps you’re using makes a difference as well. With the original Silent Approach steps I really had to get them tight as can be to hold them in place and prevent them from turning. I’ve since switched to squirrel steps or the now discontinued pioneer steps and I don’t have to get them quite as tight.

That's brilliant. You could dummy-cord it to the ratchet itself so it can't fall out of the tree. I use an EWO OCB but I've always preferred ratchet straps for just about anything you'd use a ratchet strap for.
I had that clevis pin tied to the strap like you say with a piece of paracord, but it kept coming loose. I just never got around to figuring it out since I use the OCB from Eastern Woods most of the time. But, yes, the danger (irritation factor) would be dropping that clevis pin.

I ended up ordering the EWO OCB. Should have it in a few days. Gonna try and use the ratchet strap tomorrow morning, the quiet way as someone mentioned.

I still prefer the ratchet strap that comes with the bullman platform steps. The EWO OCB strap is a close second… I will say this, the platform steps are by and far my favorite ROS. I’ve only taken my fix platform out of the truck once all season……

Man those look great. Always used my lwhc but I’m working on 2tc and might just give those a shot.

Thought about those steps too, just never pulled the trigger. Too many things I want to buy, not enough money!

The bullman platform steps are legit. only commercial steps I've owned but they are better than homemade climbpaws by quite a bit
