Figure of 8 progress capture???

Yes I use sticks and rappel down. I also use a 2 step aider and feel rappelling down is a lot safer. I don't drop my sticks but just hook them on my kydex hooks and down I go.
Thats what I'm thinking of doing. I feel like it would be not only safety but faster too. I hook a stick on each side so I could get down fast.

Nothing to add beyond what others have already said.

I started with sticks, then added aiders for additional height. I quickly saw that I was one misstep from falling and added rappelling. Once rappelling came in, I was halfway to SRT climbing and 100% to 2TC climbing. Now, my sticks collect dust and are the specialty climbing method if one of the other 2 won't work in a given area.

phatkaw Brocky been playing with the figure 8 using the phatkaw method and trying the auto stop that Brocky posted. I think I’ve found what I like…

Put the figure 8 thru the tether carabiner and behind your hitch on the tether. I’m right handed so I found it works best to then run the 8 on the right using the auto stop method. This will give you two locks on the tether and can still be tender, one at a time or both if tightening (this only seems to work if the 8 is behind the hitch legs). On the way down I squeeze the hitch with my left hand and work the 8 in my right. I keep the hitch loose so it’s not making much friction but it will still catch should I pull down too far on the 8. Seems to work really well. Open to any additional ideas y’all may have too!

You need to do a video on how you set it up and use it. Too much going on in the picture and I cant tell what is what. Also, what's the orange rope for and why is your 8 not clipped to your bridge? Looks like the only thing being used for rappel is the friction hitch, or am I missing something?

Here's how I run mine. Because I have the 3rd sewn loop for the leg straps, I'm able to keep my hollowblock lower on the rope compared to connecting it to a linemans loop. My bridge is also shorter that it normally would be to fit the picture so the gap between the hollowblock and the 8 is usually wider.

I have tried using an autoblock below my 8 and attaching to my linemans loop on my right side and it always makes me twist with my right side facing up. Which makes rappelling seem awkward. Now if I attach above my 8 and clip into my bridge then it seems to function normal.

Mine would do that too when attached to the linemans loop. My guess is that being lower, it pulls on a different part of my body vertically as opposed to torquing my waist one way or another. Once rappelling down to the platform, I can easy work hands-free to disconnect my platform while sitting vertically.

Edit: I should note that this short bridge is how I climb. Once at height, I lengthen it and keep that same longer length when rappelling.

My current SRT iteration is the Resc Tech, climbing on a Duck and rappelling on the 8 w/ the klemheist. The Madrock did work on the 8mm rope but it had a smaller tolerance being less-weighted before slipping. The Duck is smooth on the ascend, is rated for 8mm which works great once at hunting height and it's an easy switch-over to the 8. The Petzl hand ascender works fine on the 8mm and has less chatter when advancing it compared to the C-IV.

I may do that. The 8 is clipped into the same biner as the friction hitch, both on the tether/rappel rope. Orange rope between legs of Distel is a prusik tender.

And yes there is a lot going on there…was shooting and testing my new diy gear hanger with prusik and ezelius loops

@phatkaw …..So, I decided to give the “Figure 8 phatkaw wrap” a legitimate try tonight……..I can’t believe I haven’t tried this before! I think I’m going to make this my go to method for descending. Until today, I was a die-hard GriGri man.
I used a Swab….. friction hitch secured to my lineman’s loop to backup the figure 8 on decent. Absolute control as I came down (three times). If I want to stop…… I pull slack back through hitch, make the second wrap on the 8, and hang rock solid!!

In short, thank you @phatkaw for the great guidance and video. I’m officially hooked on the Figure 8.

Have fun and be safe!

^^^ That's awesome!
I'm glad you are using a backup...

The video is pretty lame but it shows how I do things.
(I should have done it without talking) lol
