Figure of 8 progress capture???

Here's how I run mine. Because I have the 3rd sewn loop for the leg straps, I'm able to keep my hollowblock lower on the rope compared to connecting it to a linemans loop. My bridge is also shorter that it normally would be to fit the picture so the gap between the hollowblock and the 8 is usually wider.

In my opinion this is the safest way to use this setup. Simply because you're already using your brake hand to stop/go from that position and should there be an issue we should not only LET GO of our descent devices but it also sure doesn't hurt to BRAKE with your BRAKE hand. And since your hand is already in the right position this way, it just makes sense.

Apologies if this has been mentioned. I just ordered a Petzl Pirana figure 8. I will report back how it performs once I get some time with it. At first glance I think it will be really good for tying of to go hands free.

LOL
I just looked up the Piranha, I'd get my fingers stuck in that thing somehow!

I hope you're better at mazes than me...

Ok guys did some experimenting this afternoon. Repelling with a figure 8 this season and I'm really getting in dialed it. Some comments were made about having to get down for some reason. I picked up some 6mm accessory cord along with a 47" webbing sling from REI today. I made a Schwabisch Hitch out of the accessory cord attached a carabiner to it followed by the sling for a foot loop. The schwabisch hitch attaches to repel rope about head height. I hook up the figure 8 for an ascend. Stand up in foot loop and move up figure 8 then slide the schwabisch up. Repeat, repeat, repeat to get back to hunting height. Works really well!

How are you rigging your 8?

Just a couple drawings I threw together real quick, hope it helps and makes sense.View attachment 51149

Yup, that’s kinda how I figured. Be careful in the auto stop rigging (ascend). A couple folks on here have had that get away and cause falls. Someone mentioned it earlier in this thread. Perhaps this is why u don’t use the same auto lock mode to rappel?

Nice drawings, by the way!

The rope should be fed through the opposite of what you show in the first drawing. It is easier for the rope to slip over the large eye and form a girth hitch locking it up.

I practiced a lot yesterday going up to around 10' countless times and with the 8 in it's ascending configuration locks instantly after you pull it up and let go. I also practiced descending in the same ascending configuration by slowly pulling down on the small hole of the 8. With right hand on the (lever) and brake line in left hand kinda behind the bridge. Worked flawlessly once I got the hang of it.

Please back it up below with friction hitch to your lineman’s loop. I didn’t and fell. It was great until it wasn’t.

I see what you're saying, I just rigged it up the way I saw phatkaw rig his in his videos. I just didn't put the extra wraps like he did cause I'm using an autoblock. I just looked back and saw your drawings and I will tie in the standard way and give that a try. Thanks for the heads up.

I haven't found a good way to manage a friction hitch back up yet. I tried a couple different things and like I said very hard to manage and get large movements. What I haven't tried but thinking about as I type this is adding a second sling to the carbineer going to the foot loop and tie it into my bridge. Something to try...

I do that when I climb with 2 hitches. I hook up to my foot loop ascender side.. It is a little more to manage, but I won't splat.

^^^ That’s great!

I’m actually pumped that Spencer put that out there!
He did a much better job of wording the advantages and disadvantages than I did that’s for sure.

@valerio024 RULES !!!
FYI I did rewatch yours again after the @valerio024 video. Still great work for a phone strapped to your head. Ain’t gotta be fancy!
