Florida quotas....discussion and results

First weekend of April is my quota. I went out to scout a little but it was all flooded and I didn't have the right stuff with me so it was a half hearted attempt. I'm going back to look this weekend... Hopefully it's dried out a little.
Put them crocs on and git goin!
Swamps are tough. It always surprises me how many turkeys they will hold up here in MD. Seems like they would hate it. I know i hate bein in there...our skeeters look like John Coffee

Can you guys pop a pig if one scoots on by? obviously would spook the turkeys when you shot but legally can you?

If hunting public land I have to follow the rules for the individual wma I'm hunting. Where I'm hunting it's turkey only....private land there's no rules on hogs all year long

It's almost application time again fellas

My first 2 kids weren't too bad but this newest 1 the terrible 2s run strong, so I'll still need to be relatively local..... So I'll be applying for the same old couple wma in the surrounding counties I always apply for...I'll apply for the sambar again for the preference point but as long as I still have a ride over to the island available I planning on the archery whitetail hunt on the island this season so that'll be a fun adventure...got preference points for archery and muzzleloader seasons and expect to draw a 1st round quota in at least 1 of them.....

I really gotta thank my local buddies I've met off of this website....u guys have sure been so generous with ur guest quotas and private land invites that I've had more hunting access in the last 2 seasons than probably all the prior seasons combined..... @Capttickle @10essee @JAYBO @Fl Canopy Stalker.....u guys alright in my book

Finally got the house finished so I’ll be ready for some weldabeast adventures this next season (flcanopystalker also). Still need to check the regs on my old free ass hunting wma’s and stuff, but I’ll come along just to get out in the woods and help drag one out!

I’m down for the team application for sambar again so we can get some points…
I’m also planning to do St Vincent’s white tail hunt (archery). Definitely applying for the normal local spots. Also if any of you guys wanna meet up to scout or hunt the quota free big woods (Osceola, Ocala, Lake George, Raiford, Camp Blanding, or Sante Fe Swamp) y’all let me know and we will make it happen. I promised myself I wasn’t going to let saddle building interfere with yet another hunting season. So I have to hold myself to that

I'm exempt so I can hunt any Quotas that allow exempt hunters. I do put in for non exempt quotas but have only been building points the last few years.

Raiford...that used to be my favorite for archery.

Phase 1 results today for quota applications

How is the term "quota" used here. In the trapping world it's used a couple different ways. Mostly in the USA it's the point where a season is shut down. Some areas it means you have to harvest X amount of animals or you could lose privileges.

Ok.... So we have 6 million acres of public land, some of it is in more rural areas and they don't require a quota permit... U can just go there and hunt during the appropriate seasons...... Other hunting woods are closer to populated areas and they set a cap on the number of hunters allowed in the property. If u want to hunt those particular wma with quotas u have to enter ur name in a drawing. They select quota winners and inform u if u are drawn out not. I live in a populated areas so the hunting woods closest to my house are almost all quota hunts. They release new brochures with the specific rules for that particular wma (wildlife management area)

The closest place to hunt for me is 9k acres and they allow 60 quotas per hunt. A quota hunt on that property is 3 days long. There are 2 hunts per season. So sep will have a 3 day archery hunt in the begining of the month and a little off time and then the 2nd 3 day archery hunt and then archery season is over....little off time and then muzzleloader is the same and gun season the same also.

Each individual wma has its own individual rules and regs so you really gotta pay attention to the wma brochures.....u can't just assume the rules are the same from year to year cause they change things.....I had an archery hunt in there and I watched a small spike inside bow range thinking that they weren't allowed cause that's the way the rules were the year prior and when the check in station guy asked if I seen anything I told him and he handed me the new brochure and showed were the rule had changed and I let a perfectly legal deer walk....duh!......

It's kinda complicated....hahaha

In a nutshell a quota permit for us is permission from the state to hunt property owned by them or property owned by something like the water management district or equivalent that works with the state on wildlife conservation.

Quota hunts are also normally the more desirable hunts in more well managed woods. That place closest to me has yearly burns and thinning and also they got 20+ year round food plots

Do the plant anything in those food plots?
The WMA next to me has food plots that they never plant anything. The plots maybe get plowed or disked.
Go hunt Joe Budd if you want to see real food plots where they grow crops for the deer and wildlife.

Yes sir....the biologist chooses what and when they plant
