Give one tip on deer hunting

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but activated charcoal hand warmer packs are great. I can typically get by with one less layer if I am using 3 of the mega size.
At the end of the day, I cut them open and pour the charcoal in my wife’s plants and mix in with the regular dirt and use the cotton pouch as tinder in the fireplace or wood burning stove.

Bonus: loose socks > tight socks

Get into the high stem count brush (think areas where the sun can hit the canopy floor). That is where you are likely to find bedding.

Yup, amazing how quiet they can come in even when you’re paying attention. My buck last year was not there one second and when i turn my head back towards the cattails he was just there, standing on the edge of them. I was so surprised because i just looked there at that spot a few seconds prior and had no idea he was coming. Even at that i barely had time to pick up my bow and ready myself for the shot as he closed the distance really quickly.

Had i not been paying attention he’d have been on top of me and i’d not been able to do a thing but watch. He never did make a sound until my arrow slid between his ribs.

I definitely try to keep my phone in my pocket.
Part of the reason I bring a book or an old Game Boy, so I don't use my phone. Not so engrossing, and every dozen pages or so I put it down to do a 360-degree scan, bino around, range trees with my rangefinder, just be present in the woods for a minute or two, etc.

Ok I have a question. I bust my guts to get some where before daylight. I go 2 or 3 miles. Do you have issue with just going slow and methodical and not being there before daylight?
For that I would be slow going in the last 300 yards or 1/4 mile. IT’s easier to go to place you have been before. Mainly slow and methodical for me is a place I am touch for the first time to hunt.

I find hot sign and pop up or sit down. Might work.

My advice is once you find hot sign, be careful not to keep going too far (without a definite plan or suspicion there's a good spot in it based upon what you can see in person or on a map).

The temptation is to keep thinking it will get better and better and you don't want to miss that. So, you end up putting your ground scent all over the area and walking out of the sign and kinda boogering up your set up.

My dad and I was having this exact conversation today. Dad told me. If I find several piles of poo in a little bitty area. Just sit down or pop up a tree and don’t go any further. Just one old guys idea lol

not bad advice

don't forget you can look at sign with binoculars so that you don't have to walk over to it and get your boot scent everywhere

Now I know most of y’all have hunted a long time. Myself have hunted since I was little with a rifle. Just made the archery swap in that last few years. Proving difficult. Now not everyone has to participate but I thought it would be good for each or some of us to share one tip for new or even seasoned hunters. I’ll share something I believe.

just because it looks like a deer should live there doesn’t mean they do. 90% of the deer use 10% of the woods.

This was and occasionally still is my problem. I get too hung up on ''this spot looks awesome, deer will def be here!'' but when you really break it down, there is no sign worth mentioning if any at all...surprise i hardly saw deer starting out. Find sign! if you already walked a mile and find a spot that looks awesome but no sign, keep walking!

Don't wear blue jeans if deer hunting. Learned that one the hard way a couple times

What happened? ......bad chafing?
No, deer see blue 10-20x better than humans do. Essentially blue looks like neon to them. I've been way up a tree with perfect wind in jeans and they whipped their heads right up and look at me at 20-25ft.

Know where he is likely to be in the daytime. He may not be there all the time, but you just need the right time.
