Gonna try one sticking

Title pretty self explanatory. I’ve hunted from a saddle for a while and have a couple different sticks I’ve using to preset trees and use. Well I’m sick of carrying four sticks so here we go trying one sticking. I’m apprehensive about it due to having total hip replacement in both hips last year but screw it we shall try

I could of made my other sticks work but I’d rather spend money and collect a buncha crap before I die. I ordered

Tethrd one stick

A 3 step aider from custom Amsteel products

And the hangfree rappelling kit with the madrock

Is there anything major I’m missing?

I’ll post pics of it all on a tree when it comes.

I think the tethrd one stick is probably the toughest stick to one stick with. A basic stick like a single beast stick with a cam cleat would be much easier, imo. I tried using the tethrd stick and wasn’t a fan of one sticking with it.

It looks like you should have everything. Not having to carry multiple sticks has been a game changer for me this year.

I debated on a stick with cam cleat but wanted to stay a bit cheaper. I watched couple videos with the one stick and it didn’t seem too hard. In the back my head I’m toying with idea adding the cam cleat to the one stick. We shall see got all year to practice.

Be open to changing up your stick and rappelling game. There’s many one stick configs and rappelling setups.
Also, if you haven’t already incorporate some kind of hip/joint mobility program into your routine. One sticking requires a bit more ….. athleticism and usage of bendy bits; getting a cramp whilst hanging off the side of a tree while a buck is coming towards you is not a good feeling.

I am old as dirt still one stick and rappel. Try to shorten your steps. Make small moves up the tree. Should not be a problem just go slow. You should not be in any strain or pain while one sticking if you do, try to correct. Good luck

I’m new to one sticking as well, and have probably only done 9 - 10 climbs, but it is still getting better each time as I figure out the nuances. I’m using the JX 3 top stick, and I have learned that shortening each move by about 6” from what I was originally attempting makes a world of difference. Rappelling down makes it even better.

I run a cam buckle on the one stick & single step aider. Probably the best stick I’ve tried.

I don’t like an aider much. I use a full size Hawk helium and a single step aider. It does have a cam cleat on it with an amsteel attachment cord. If your stick doesn’t have something on top to reach down and grab, get a giant niteize gear tie and put on there. Instead of grabbing the top of the stick, just reach down and grab the handle!
