Good cheap knives that don't suck.

Thanks for posting this! My buddy hates liner-locks on knives because one failed on him and cut his fingers really good. I think it was a Kershaw.
I think this will be a XMas gift for him.

One downside to this design is that it doesn't lock automatically. You have to remember to rotate the metal ring so that the handle slot is covered.

Mora, Green River, Old Hickory, Victorinox paring knife all good performers and won't make you cry if you sent it down in the woods and can't find it again.

i have an opinel, great little knife. haven't used it on a deer yet but plenty of sticks/fire prep, heck i even battonned firewood with it once just to see if it would break. it didn't. it does need to be sharpened a bit more regularly than my "nicer" pocket knife, but that may just be because it gets more/ harder use.

I'll give another vote for the Ontario knife company rat series. I have a few rat 2 folders.

Another favorite is the cold steel canadian belt knife

I bought a Gerber set probably 20 years ago, sharpen knife once in awhile but it's been the best I've seen. Kit has a gut hook(changeble blades), saw with bone and wood blade and knife in a soft case. If I ever see another I'll buy it

Helle polar knife I assembled 20 years ago. Have cut up 4 deers on average before sharpening is needed and a buck cross lock that I got years ago and I have like many too many knives but these 2 are my go to knives year after year easy sharpening and really holds a edge. The polar I got the blade for $7 and it’s my favorite bar none over all my knives I can really shave with it and have proven it to a few friends

I have a lot of really high end knives and lots of cheap ones. My favorite knife ever for General Hunting and skinning duty is my Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter. Its expensive. Mora knives Eldris is another I carry, its a good little knife. I prefer a small knife while skinning. A good Compromise of quality to price is the classic Buck Vanguard, USA made and not too expensive.

The benchmade use to be around 100 bucks, they have gone up. I will not buy anymore benchmade knives for reasons I will not talk about on SH. But still my favorite.

I also have a bunch of hand made knives from a local smith that were around 40 bucks. Amazing hand forged knife, local knife smiths are another good option for lower cost but great quality. Lot of people have begun knife making after watching forged in fire. As long as they use good steel and threheat treat and temper is good you can get amazing deals on some very nice knives.

Also have an Outdoor Edge knife that is like the Havalon, used it once and seems to work fine. Need a couple more deer under its belt to formulate a better opinion on it.

I use a victorinox forester. Solid knife, with a saw, I always split the pelvis and almost always split the ribs. I just find it much easier. The knife holds its edge very well, locks open, and is relatively cheap!

Whittled up an elk and a half dozen or so deer with the outdoor edge replaceable blade knife and it has worked really well. My 40 year old buck folder is always reliable too.

Found one of these on eBay and paid less than $20. I have several Morakniv knives I keep in various pieces of gear. My EDC knife is an Ontario RAT 1. My next one will probably be an ESEE Avispa.

Cold steel pendleton lite hunter, about $17 on Amazon. Gutted 3 deer with that knife, and it was still shaving hair before I touched it up with a lansky ultra fine stone
