Got sticks

I like how you threaded the rope through the stick. Did you do anything to prevent chafing on the rope as it exits the stick?

I used a counter sink bit on the hole and then I just hit it inside and out with a small file. Seems pretty smooth but I’ll be checking it before and after every use.

My original plan was to tuck the knot inside the stick but i just couldn’t get it to fit.

What is the weight on rappelling gear?
The vast majoity of the weight/bulk is in the rope itself. I carry 40' or Teufelberger Tachyon 11.5mm rope (6 lbs/100ft so a little less than three pounds). You can use an ATC (Black Diamond is about 2 oz) and prusik (approx. 3 ft of 6mm rope, negligible) for your descender. A lot of guys are using smaller/lighter rope so I'd say I'm on the conservative side at right around 3 lbs. You'll also need 30 feet or so of paracord or something similar for retrieval line (again negligible) but that doubles as my pull up line as well.

Personally I use a Madrock Safeguard (about 5 ozs) to rappel and I carry an ATC and prusik as a backup in case I drop the Safeguard. The weight is negligible and it fits in my pack well. As I said, a good estimate is right around 3 lbs.

What’s the average time to set rope, rappel, retrieve rope, & pack up rope? Weighing options to see the benefit in rappelling down.

Cant wait to try this. Waiting on my safeguard. Oplux ropes and harken cam en route. Anybody have a link to suggestions on the best way to mod a helium stick? A diagram of some sort so I can make sure I don't screw something up irreversibly? I never underestimate my dumbassery.

I'm not as quick as @Squirrels but I'm definitely under 5 minutes. I stop on the way down to remove my platform and stick. Once down I unhook, pull the rope down and coil it and and my pull down cord up. Pack it up in my pack and I'm off. Really very quick.

I cut mine at 23.5 inches from the top, primarily because I didn't want to the leave the sharp corners open on either side of the long slots. I was afraid they'd cut my pack bottom. I then used the cut off bottom as a template to locate the screw holes for the steps and lower standoff holes. I eyeballed the position so the two step holes are centered on the wide non-relieved potion of the stick and clamped the cutoff portion on to provide a good template. That mimics the original design in terms of support for the step screws.

Ontariofarmer posted a pretty good reference video as well. I'd make sure the center the step holes pretty close in that unrelieved section to keep the strength.

I concur with above I would say a sub 2 min would be easy using a screw link instead of girth hitching. I girth hitch 7/16" rope and feed 30' through the eye and use a bd atc and walk down tree Im probably closer to the 5 min mark.

So. How much does it weigh. The question @Cbigbear asked
I get in trouble when I give a subjective opinion. Here is an objective fact
2 pounds 7.6 oz. About the weight of one muddy stick but it is more compact and quieter
includes

One heavy screw link
Two large carabiners.
One mad rock safe guard
One small rope for a auto block
Forty feet of Oplux
One @DanO fleece bag to put it in
One s biner to clip the bag to my saddle

And yes a screw link speeds up the setup

And having small packable Oplux speeds the packing up of the rope
Total time to repel and pack up. I cannot give an objective fact

A subjective opinion. Being slow careful and safe. 2 minutes to set up check and pull out my rope.
One minute to repel retrieve my stick and steps
One minute to pack the rope up
I shoved all the stuff in the picture into my fleece bag in 30 seconds. I know 9 mm ultra tech takes much longer to pack up
A best guess

Are the harken cam cleats worth the $33?
Are they light?

I wouldn't want to outfit a whole set of sticks with them but I wouldn't trade the one on my single stick for any other attachment method. I tried a versa button and daisy chain but its difficult for me to undo at my knee level when I'm hanging in the tree. With the cam cleat I just lift the stick to take the pressure off and pull the rope out. It doesn't get any easier than that.

Yeah, it's the combo of the rope cam, oplux rope and rapelling down that finally sold me on trying one sticking. Couldn't picture in my mind how it wouldn't be a pain in the butt without the complete picture. Can't wait to get all of my stuff in.
