Greetings from Finland

Wow. Lot's of friendly folks here. Thanks, everyone.

Hunting here is pretty regulated and there are some hoops to jump but it's still pretty easily accessible. One has to take a written hunter's exam and after passing it pay the annual national licence. Then a permit from the landowner is needed. This could be commercial or just a word of mouth.

For anything from roe deer and up, a shooting proficiency test is required, and this applies to both rifle and bowhunters. Also, whitetails, moose and bear need a specific licence that has to be applied for, usually by a club, a year beforehand. The amount of licences available is based on the estimated population and the need to control it.

When it comes to bear and moose, the lawmakers are a bit slow to react on the changes in hunting styles and equipment and hence think that a rifle is needed for these. Although moose should become available for bowhunters pretty soon. I've read the proposition to change the law and it looks pretty good.

Whitetail season is from September 1st to February 15th. Night hunting is allowed on all game, but no artificial light. Some animals that are considered pests are excluded from the light ban, including wild boar and raccoon dog.

On night hunting: It's pretty magical to sit in ambush when the full moon shines on the fields wrapped in a blanket of snow.

Here's the official hunting season chart, in somewhat clumsy English..

I actually have spent some time in the U.S. Lived in Central Texas for the last three years of the last century and did get to travel around some. Still have some friends who live there. Have been to Mihcigan as well. You guys have some kick ass fishing.

If anyone's ever in my neck of the woods, please give a holler!

That sounds pretty awesome! Can you use special optics, like night vision, or thermal imaging?
