Just curious if any of the ultralight addicts have try using 3/4 inch tube instead of the standard 1 inch. I just noticed that the Shikar were 3/4 inch so I was just wondering if for the guys under 200ish lbs, would 3/4 be enough strength? What about 7075 aluminum? If we are able to get standoff and steps fitting to be solid. How much weight would reducing the tube size really save?

I would think you could make shorter sticks out of 3/4" square but it would flex too much for long sticks.....

OOAL sticks are 5/8" square stock. At least the set I owned were.

I've made a stick out of 3/4" .110" 6005 aluminum and it functioned well for a 200lb fellow at 18" step spacing.

With a quick google search, you can be at one of the handful of online metal distributors that sell aluminum square tubing, giving weights for 1" versus 3/4". Probably less time than it took to type the above post.

Having said that - 6061 1" versus 3/4" (.125" wall) is a weight difference of 29%, or about 2.4 ounces per foot of tubing.

Thank you, I got the OOAL Shikar sticks measure wrong then.

According to DanO's site his feather sticks save around 1.7 onces per foot. So 3/4 tubes might even be lighter without needing to shave or drill.

Argh, I feel like i'm being pulled into that minimalist cult.

I actually have been playing with a 3/4” stick build this year and now have ordered Dan O’s double steps that he is now carrying for 3/4. Pic below is my stick I’ve been experimenting with next to a Hawk. I have been able to use a cam cleat on it as well

It’s held up fine and is now cut down to about 10”. I had Lone Wolf stand offs on it, but just ordered the EWO ones from Dan O!
