Just bought a set of hawk helium sticks. For you guys that have them when you're carrying them what do you do with the straps? I like them because they have double steps unlike my Lonewolf sticks . With the LW I can loop the straps around the cleats and back to the versa button.

A lot of us take off the straps that come on the Helium and put a versa button on them, (either LW or home made) and use LW straps or rope for attaching to tree. Either way, you can wrap them for carrying as you did with your LW sticks.

I just got some helium climbing sticks as well and hear a lot about the versa buttons. What's the advantage of them? Is it just quicker and safer?

A little faster, lighter, and most of all quieter.

Yup. The versa buttons allow you to use different straps from the ones that come with the heliums. They have that huge bracket and those huge hooks. Noisy, heavy, cumbersome. I use 1/4" Amsteel with mine. Light, quirk and quiet.

I’ve removed the straps as I like the versa button/rope mod better. Lighter, easier to use, and quieter.

I typically use a couple night eyes gear ties to keep them together and then just strap them to my pack.

A lot of guys also cut down their Hawk Helium sticks for better packability.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the pics. I have these sticks as well and just got my versa buttons in, can you tell me what type of rope that is and the length you used. Also I'm wondering how you carry them on your backpack; I've just had them strapped to my treestand but now about to have a saddle they need to be attached to my backpack and I'm trying to figure out the best way

Do not use knots on amsteel do a simple brummel splice. this is probably why some of you are experiencing slip with ropes. my sticks do NOT sink further on the tree then web with metal cams

No problem man! I’m using 5/16” Amsteel Blue. I think about 6 or seven feet long.

I just strap em to each side of the pack

The versa button allows you to use rope.

IMO, if you are going to stick with a cambuckle, there is little to gain. Trims a few ounces as the hardware that comes with the sticks is heavier. But function and noise, no material difference.

Great job on the versa buttons. Check out DaveT's post above yours (#8). Samson highly recommends that you do not use knots with amsteel. Do the locked brummel like Dave mentioned. You'll lose about the same amount of rope, but there's no chance of it coming undone and it'll be smaller than the overhand on a bight you tied.

Cheerss

How do you "tie" the climbing stick on the tree with the versa button? I get that you use the Locked Brummel over the button, but what do you do with the tag end? I thought you were not supposed to tie knots with Amsteel.

U wrap it around the versa button & makes sure u wrap behind the loop. It pinches tight with loop already on button. Then follow up with 1 or 2 half hitches back on itself as safety insurance.

Search on here & you tube. I know there are some videos.

What bolt did you use to put the Lonewolf versa button on? The original helium bolt is too short and the lone wolf bolt is too big in diameter. Did you have to buy a separate bolt? If so, what did you buy?

Don’t buy anything, just drill the hole bigger to accept the line wolf bolt.

Just ordered 3 versa buttons and 3 lonewolf straps . I like the straps better than the rope but that's just me. I sure the rope is lighter but I just don't mind the extra weight.

Straps are nice too. Easy to get them tight.
