Helium Steps

I can’t believe they don’t flop around because they are so narrow. I did the mod to my helium’s in the spring and I almost ditched the scrap parts but I said to myself “someone on saddle hunter will figure out how to do something cool with this” so I kept all my scrap.

I just hope someday I’m the guy that will think of something cool. I’m not holding my breath. I’ll just keep happily stealing everyone else’s ideas!

They are actually a little wider than the squirrel steps.

Took them out to my proving grounds today and stood on them for a bit. I was actually thinking the the grooves (runners) where I split the sticks down the middle would help grip the tree.

Although they do, what I found is that they start to chew the bark up pretty good when you work them back and forth and once they do they don’t seem to recover from side pressure as well.

So now I’m thinking I’m gonna grind the runners off and make them flat like the squirrel steps. This will make them a little lighter too.

Another note is that the squirrel steps have more of an angle up when set in the tree whereas these are almost 90 degrees. I suppose @DanO knows a little something about what he’s doing lol.

I think all in all they handled side pressure pretty well. I tested them right next to my squirrel steps and I think the squirrel steps perform better but I’ve always had some flex in those. It has never bothered me as long as they return to the original position after I pull my foot off. Squirrel steps are the only ROS I’ve ever used but I’d imagine some flex is inevitable with any step that straps onto the tree.

I use a ROB (bolts) for most of my presets and they don’t flex at all .

I wonder if you could put a screw or two through the bottom facing the tree and secure if with a nut and washer on the tree side so that a quarter inch or more still protrudes into the tree to add stability almost like teeth on a platform.

I’m sure it wouldn’t be difficult to do.

Finished hunting this morning, got the lights down, and went to grinding on my pro steps. Cut the 3 runners off and made the backside smooth to see if they would perform better.

Then I couldn’t help myself to see if I could make them lighter than the squirrels steps so I drilled a few holes in one.

Strapped them on the tree and I think they hold up better now with the smooth back.
