Helmets

It’s deer hunting, not an extreme sport, or cutting limbs off of trees. Just climb to 15, 20, 25 feet and hunt. I used to hunt out of a wooden stand I built from scrap wood I found in a dumpster. Saddle hunting should be simple, don’t overthink it.

Yep. Probably w/no tether or LB either. How did we ever survive??

This is why I hunt elevated during gun season. I’ve seen bullet trails as they rip through tree branches.

Last year a local got shot on permission private in the head and neck by a guy flintlock hunting for turkey. How the heck that happens says alot about some folks hunting practices.

On the other hand, there’s guys on here carrying extra medical gear to potentially help out other hunters who get hurt.

I don’t see myself wearing a helmet, but a couple years ago I had a huge tree collapse in front of me. It was surreal how it folded on top of itself like an accordion. I‘ve experienced a couple earthquakes and the tremor of the ground as it fell was on par. Had it fell my way I’d have been in trouble, and might have been thankful for a helmet.
I had a tree come down a few feet from my blind this year. It was only about four inches in diameter but it still scared the hell out of me lol. I didn't pay any attention to it when I was setting the blind up. Better believe I pay more attention now. Guess I should be wearing a helmet in the woods regardless of what I'm doing lol.

Y'all out here driving cars down two lane highways at 60-65 mph and no one wears a helmet but are concerned about climbing a tree and needing one . Like others have mentioned, I'm more concerned about taking a stay bullet during rifle season from the idiot that Sayed up drinking all night and emptying his rifle at deer running past at 150 yards.

I had another come down by me this year. Pine. Still had needles, so not an obviously dead tree (to me). This one stayed mostly in one section. It wasn't even windy. My brother was hunting nearby and thought I fell from the tree I was in.

One area I hunt is full of dead ash. I've never seen one drop, but avoid them. I'm familiar enough with the area that I can do that well enough.

In all honesty I've thought about it, but haven't bought one. I wear a helmet on my motorcycle, and running a chainsaw. Having a branch fall on my noggin - worst case, while rappelling - would ruin my whole day.

I'd probably feel like too much of a goof to actually do it though. Funny how peer pressure works.

No, not lots of machismo just down home common sense. Has someone been killed from a falling branch, sure. Do the infinitesimally small odds of it happening to you warrant wearing a helmet? Most reasonable people would say no. You probably have better odds of choking on you lunch.
