Ok I am new at this. So please forgive me. I am using a ring of ameristeps as a platform. I have a molle entrenching tool pouch that I use to carry in the steps attached to my saddle. The problem I have is when I am done hunting. What do I do with them. Trying to get those things back in my pouch is literally like trying to cram 10 gallons of crap into a 5 gallon bucket.

Thanks

Scott

I had the exact same problem and it is really frustrating in the dark.

What I started doing is, I shove all the steps together at the end of the strap. I buckle it together and pull the strap as tight as it will go. Then I put all the backs of the steps together and wrap the strap around them. This is the most important part. I keep a big thick rubber band in my pouch that I then wrap twice around the steps and strap. That keeps the whole thing together like its one piece. Then its pretty easy to stick it in your pouch and it all stays together so it’s also easy to pull out again.

could you not attach a length of 550 and just lower them down the tree? That way you could repack on the ground instead of trying to do it in the tree.

Thanks fellas, I guess I could just lower them down with a pull up rope, I carry 2 anyway. I was super pissed last night coming down.

and red squirrel thank you for the direct link to amazon.
No problem. That is just the one I've been using. It takes a little while to break it, I've had it squeak a little in the past but once it's broke in it works. If you find something that works even better please let me know :)

Where the skys are so blue!
When I get home tonight I'll take a picture of my ROS. I've been 100% happy with it so far after some tweakage in the September hog season. Took some pointers from papasquirrel and daveT, and added a personal flourish for good measure.

It is, in my mind, the only right way to do ameristeps.

When I used to use steps, I never gave two thoughts about trying to reorganize when I was done for the night.

It gets easier to do once the weather gets cooler. Never walk in with all my layers on, need pack space to carry layers. Once done with the hunt, I leave the majority of the layers on for the walk out, as I am quite chilled by that point anyway, and I don't care if I sweat a bit on the way out. The extra pack space now is used to cram all the stuff in that typically would be hard to do in the dark, including steps. When I get home, reorganize and repeat.

The only thing I now keep on the saddle is my lineman’s belt girth hitched to one side (L) and clipped to the other. I either feed the tag end from right through the LB loop on the left and back to right with a quick knot on carabiner or daisy chain on the right. This keeps the saddle from flopping with the bridge and LB tucked into the waist belt. Everything else including ameristeps are kept in a small bag I made a paracord shoulder strap for. If need be the strap or the tether can also be used as a single step aider if I were to drop the moveable aider.

I get to tree. Take off pack. Remove sticks and small pouch. Attatch first stick with moveable aider. Attach pull rope to bow and pack. Sling pouch over head like a sling pack. Attach stick 2 and 3 to side of saddle. Climb and set tether, platform and gear hanger. Pull up pack and bow and hunt. It’s the reverse for coming down. Everything I need while climbing is in the pouch. Pull rope, aider, saw, tether, platform and gear hanger. It’s easier to get to than being attached to the back of the saddle because you can have it on front to remove something or behind so it doesn’t interfere with your climb and the best part is there is nothing hanging from the back of the saddle.

Perfection. The camoform is surprisingly durable, and combined with small strips of industrial Velcro on the sides make them vewwy, vewwy quiet. The elastic loop keeps everything tidy. The cambuckle keeps everything tight.

I've considered drilling a small hole in the tree-side of each step to insert a small, neodynium magnets into. This way when you fold the steps they would lock into place. But that's a next year thing.

These work great. I bought and sold a predator. :)

I use the big size pouch from Areohunter it fits the steps and ratchet strap and whatever else I want to put in it. It hangs off the mollie webbing on my kestrel. I use an endless strap from Strapworks on my ameristep.

X2 on the aerohunter pouch. I wear the saddle in and use the pouch to haul in gear.

@Nutterbuster - didn’t you cut the wings off of an ameristep to make the pack tighter together? I see the wings on these - did you find it unstable, not worth it, ran out of time, etc? I use an ameristep ROS a lot so was curious...

Excellent question.

I found the wings added a great degree of stability. Kind of surprised me, really. The aluminum ameristeps that were narrower also suffered from a stability standpoint.

They definitely pack better without wings, but they still pack better than most options as-is. I think the only way you could make a 1" or sub step would be with a 2" strap.
