How do you carry your pistol when saddle hunting? I usually have my IWB kydex holster when hunting, but basically anything on my waist is a no go in a saddle. Not big on having it in my backpack, despite my super day pack having makeshift holster in the waist belt.

Almost thinking about getting a thigh holster, but open carry isn't really my bag.

Tips?
 
I don't normally, but when I'm home in PA it's either appendix, shoulder, or ill wear an 8 oclock(southpaw) till I get to the tree, put pistol and holster in its own pocket in backpack, strap on saddle and climb. Reverse it coming out. The odds you need it in the tree, and won't have time to grab it are rediculous.

I haven’t done it in a saddle, but I used to trail run A LOT and do all of my hunts with a chest rig. The one I have is a Hill People Gear Snubby kit + Glock 23. Back then I was doing 40 miles a week minimum. I was thinking this same question last week after a run in with two pit bulls and was thinking it was time to bring the HPG out of retirement.

Here in ky you can carry a pistol with you during bow season if you have ccdw. Witch I have to say I would do regardless. But I carry a glock in a inter wast band holster or my 1911. So what do you guys do with your pistol when you hunt out of your saddle. I have not wore a saddle but my first...

Yesterday was my first full day saddle hunting. I used a drop leg holster.

I won't be using it again. The clips that go up to the belt really dug into me after hours of the saddle pressure.

probably going to move to a shoulder harness.
 
Have carried a pistol in the past just never needed to. Saddle hunting is all about weight so gun stays home, knife in pocket. No grizzly bears here lol.

I keep my gun in the Holster built into my badlands super day. I have no need for it in the tree, only while walking in or out. I used mine last fall on a big hog at 10 yards while walking out. Glad I had it accessible.
 
Must be nice to only have to worry about the wildlife...
I’m looking for a chest rig at the moment just not interested in paying as much for it as I did the gun. Amazon has some soft holsters that may get the job done. All I want is a comfortable harness that holds it tight to my body and a snap/Velcro to secure it. Otherwise it’s a paddle holster to the tree then it and my belt go into the pack when the saddle goes on. I haven’t found a belt worthy of holding up a gun that is comfortable with a saddle.
 
So we had 2 fugitives get in a shootout with police, shooting 1. They were able to catch one guy, but the other wasn’t caught for several days. He was hiding out on some public land. (I think I got the story right) Not only are there feisty predators in the woods. Now we have to worry about killers and criminals. Also we had a guy hold up the gas station about a mile from our house. He was caught the next day on the property beside ours. Needless to say, I don’t leave home without a handgun, ever. I have been carrying appendix, but seriously looking and a chest rig for hunting

I picked up a Hill People Gear kit bag just this week. I like it although I did have to take it off in the tree. The bridge was rubbing it making noise. Otherwise it comes in very handy. Great place for my release, grunt call, binocs. etc.

34524268-EE3E-4C53-829A-6D8F9A6C2B25.jpegThis is what I carry my Ruger SR1911 in. Stays tight and close. Doesn’t interfere with bridge at all. Keeps my hog shooter close and handy. Did put some silencer material(fuzzy part of Velcro) on the buckles but other wise it’s great. The Chicago screw can be set for any amount of tension you want. Have mine set to where it can be yanked out in a hurry but won’t let the gun slip out on its own. Can very quietly ease it out if needing stealth. One strap is partly elastic so you can set how much body grip you get. Very pleased with mine.
