How Much Total Weight do You Carry

Just weighed my kit. I'm right at 19lbs.

Kestrel Flex
8mm Oplux tether with Kong duck
4 WE steps and bag
Perch
5 step aider
Backpack
GPS
Knife
Head lamp
Surefire
Range finder
Nalgene bottle
Bow
Quiver and 5 arrows
Bow release

I don't know how I could trim much more weight. Might save a pound when I use my mantis instead of the flex.......
Man that's lite...but I am carrying 3 more steps than you...I just feel like yourself dont know how I would trim things down...

Yeah I kind of made it a point this year to go by the rule if I don't need it for sure....then I'm not bringing it. So if it doesn't get used everytime I go out then it's gone. I also try to use as much of my gear for more than one purpose as I can. Like using my linesman belt as my tether too.

Ya Murph, I'm trying hard to thin it down, I know my Pack Rabbit Frame doesn't have to be used everytime out especially on pre sets. My pre sets I leave 3 WE steps high in the tree so I'll be carrying less going in. But on those excursions that take me to.places nobody goes too drives me to bring more than the essentials...thanks for your interest and help on this thread

Mantis w/tether(1.5 lbs)
Ameristep ROS(1.5 lbs)
Yates big wall aider w/tether(1.5 lbs)
Backpack: knife, deer drag, snacks, goldbond, survival kit, poo poo paper, and 2 liters(2lbs) of water. (3.5 lbs total)

8lbs. total which will lighten up as I drink the water.

I don't think there will ever be a lighter saddle than the mantis. One great thing about that saddle is sometimes when I'm walking around the woods I forget I'm even wearing it.

How high do you get with the 4 WE steps? i find that as i struggle to shave weight, i'm often losing height. however, i have also found that I can hunt effectively at 12 to 15 ft also.

With my 5 step aider I usually get 7 feet with the first step and about 6.5 with the next two and about 3 more feet with the 4th step which I use my knaider hooked onto my perch to get up on to. So around 23 feet or so. If I try I can get over 25 easy.

I'm a first year saddle hunter. This thread is interesting.

Right now, I'm right at about 25lbs with the Hybrid w/o weapon. It'd be interesting to break it down between pack, saddle, and climbing method. Weighing each separately, my saddle is like 11 lbs (but that includes ropes, my knife on the belt, my tree hopper drill, doyle's hunting hoist, and a dump pouch with pruners and folding saw). My pack is around 10 lbs with the rest being climbing system.

I plan on bringing 1 cutdown LW stick plus and aider and tree hopper drill and 10 bolts. I may use them in combination (1st stick gets me to 6.5 feet real quick and then I use bolts. I could just one-stick or just use bolts. Obviously, I could save some weight there by choosing one method....2 lbs or so I guess.

I noticed most guys don't seem to be bring binos, some don't seem to have two ropes (tether and LB). I don't see calls/grunt tube. I don't see alot of purners and saws (which I can't imagine leaving behind). I have all my gear in a fanny pack and it still weighs nearly 10 lbs. I have to figure out what extra I'm bringing in there....

I think it depends on where you hunt and climbing system. Public land-no saws. Deep swamps/thickets-no binos. Tethered climbing system-no LB. Warm weather-no extra clothes. I personally don’t take any calls/scents, I like to let the woods naturally play out. If you do take a saw there’s a “do all saw” by dead deer that is a broadhead with a saw attachment, should cut out some weight. Maybe use a monocular instead, half the weight of binos.

I still need to weigh mine but if I had to guess, maybe around 11-13 lbs just for my W/E stepps and aider and saddle and ropes. My other hunting gear I still haven’t put in my pack yet.

Glad this thread started. I was already planning on weighing. I will do so soon, I think I may be on the high end of the spectrum. Cranford steps, binocs, ozonics, they add up fast.

Dang, y’all carry a lot of stuff. I’m at 21lbs with camera and arm (doesn’t include my bow).

Mine changes depending on the time of year I'm hunting.
Summer load out is lighter: game call, camelbak, thermocell, light, saddle with kit, stick, platform and a fanny pack, recon that's around 20 lbs. That's minus rifle.
Winter load out has layers plus grunt tube, smaller water, probably 25 lbs, minus bow but I don't have far to walk either. Furthest I have to walk is about half a mile maybe a bit longer.

excellent setup! all that with 4 steps. i'm impressed. 23ft is more than enough! good work man.

Food for thought but should the saddle count towards your weight if your wearing it & it’s not in a pack?? B/c then we should start weighing clothes & boots & weapons.......

It seems like the largest common factor is your climbing method. Not to point out the obvious I guess. I carry 3 hawk helium sticks which cost me a few lbs but they pack well so it doesn't matter all that much to me. Im walking a mile plus wherever I go and I'd rather carry a few extra pounds to save a few minutes at the tree.

It definitely should count. If we are comparing getting up in a tree, it is needed. Clothes, boots and weapons can be used ground hunting.

IMO, not counting saddle and gear on the saddle because you “wear” it is a feeble attempt at making oneself look better or trying to be a saddle apologist.

Weigh it and let the chips fall where they may.
