How to get strange looks. AKA DIY platform

Thats pretty sweet right there! nice work!
Haven't weighed it yet. Finished the work at my father in laws place because he has better tools. And lives next to lake Erie so combined the trip with some good walleye fishing.

Great idea. How much does it weigh?

Just weighed it 4.3lbs. So a little heavy. More disconcerting though was that the top standoff was pulling away from the tree when I tested it quick. I had it wrenched pretty tight. The stick is 10 inches and the button is 3 inches from the top. However I believe it needs to be higher since the platform is where it takes the weight and that is almost 3 inches from the bottom. I figured a work around but I don't like it long term. When the platform is attached and tightened I can lift the bottom of the platform out so it s now at 90 degrees to the tree. From there I can tighten it more and then essentially cam it back down. I worry this will place too much stress on the tube where the bolt for the top stand off passes through and cause warping. It was tight! though.

So moving forward I will move the button up about an inch. I will work on removing a bit more excess metal to cut weight. Then paint and add some camo form tape and some grip tape.

So I moved the button up but am still getting the same issue of the top wanting to pull away. Its minor and if I cam the the platform a bit it goes away. I also removed a piece in the centre allowing the platform to fold flatter. Despite what looked like a sizable amount removed the weight is still 4.2lbs.

I hung it from my practice tree but just at the base. It moved ever so slightly with full side pressure then locked tight. All in all a major upgrade in stability and portability for me. Even if the weight is only slightly reduced.

So next steps are inner tube over the buckle, some filing down of edges, camo form tape a couple spots, paint it then grip tape it.

Maybe the platform brackets would work better for this then the climbing Sticks brackets.Give DanO a call about the Brackets.

So many of the original platforms built like this that were not Klemz style used the same brackets I have and did not appear to have this issue. I may change the brackets as a test but I will make my own if I do.

You may have seen this if so disregard. Made a couple similar platforms and had the best results using a little versa strap to hold it on the tree (could use para cord as it isn’t load bearing just keeps in place) then attached the strap to the platform itself with a mod someone came up with (DanO maybe?). This way are able to adjust the strap and cam the seat over. Held my 220# well.

Most likely the problem is the choice of footwear. If you had some crocs think you would find the platform will become rock solid regardless of what you do.

Yeah I tend to agree I may pick some camo ones at the TSC on my home tonight. Lol. I do have some very stout wooden shoes to that may work.

Attaching the strap to the platform itself is an option. Just haven't found a quiet simple method for it yet.

I will see if I can’t find the thread for that mod. What it would look like is cut the short strap form the non-adjustable side of the buckle and sew a new one with the metal hooks that some cam straps use. Pick one of those slots and girth hitch the straps on either side. Will look like this.

With this the hook detaches instead of fighting the webbing thru the buckle...I hate that.

If you need one let me know I have several. Could sew you one up if need be. Important to inspect often as the webbing rides against the slot but I didn’t have any issues.

Mule tape and the little metal tension clip. I used it on my lock on stands for added grip at the bottom of the post. Would also work at the top. You can probably get some mule tape and the clip for free at a lumber yard or a construction site dumpster that's in the rough framing stages. It's used for lashing stacked lumber and trusses. Packs small and weights next to nothing. These things hold whole house truss packages from shifting during transport......they are crazy strong for the size and weightIMG_20190705_185424.jpgIMG_20190705_185353.jpg

I think I gotchya. As long as each portion is long enough to girth hitch through a slot and still allow me to reach them. Throw one end around the back of the tree connect it to the other, pull it tight, cam platform down into place. Would that small hooked end be strong enough?

Spot on with hooking them up. This hook was the stock connection on the primal tree steps (WE knock offs). Seeing how you cam them over as well don’t imagine it would be a problem.

My in-laws live in Buffalo, sent some pics from Lake Erie, think they caught 28....and all I caught today was a couple 12” bass . Was fun thou.

Got to looking, DanO sells the straps pre-made on his site for 14$ or so.

I'll look into it. Exchange and shipping usually makes it impractical.

Well here is the next evolution of my platform. Thanks to @Sheldon I have a good way to cam it over. I have significantly reduced the length of post I use. 4 inches maybe. It's an effort to cam over but its tight when done that way. Look at the bottom picture. With the strap hanging slack it stays put (after use). I could never satisfactorily alleviate the top of the post pulling away from the tree. Shortening the post helped likely in large part because the shorter the post the less pronounced the pull away will be. My main concern was whether or not I'd be able to cam it while standing on sticks. Well I can. I found it easier to do when already tethered as opposed to using the LB still. This introduced a problem with getting onto the platform though because it was directly above the sticks. No easy way to keep slack out...dumbass. So note to self I will place platform more to the side next time to make getting onto it easier. I use my tether at chin height and keep a short bridge.
Now that I've built this one and observed some of these tree suit platforms...I'm not sure if this will make it to the end of the season before getting replaced......jerks......
Weight on my digital scale is 4.12lbs so 4lbs 2 ounces.

It was said a while back, but if you’ll swap out the stickoffsets with stand offsets she’ll bite into the tree and be rock solid when you cam it over.

Yeah, not totally convinced of that because it pulled away, so regardless of shape the forces pulling away are the same. Guys are finding a similar issue with the predator at times too.
