I have a bone to pick with some of you...

Yea I didn’t take it in any way @Bigterp and I also wasn’t trying to start a VS thread that’s why I added that clarifying

i also noticed that I don’t have to change my tether length to go from lean to sit. When I use a platform I almost alway have to let out more tether to be able to comfortably. I think it’s because being away from the tree applies more pressure bc of the geometry.

I will add that I have. Ever used a platform larger than a scout so I’m sure there are some nice aspects of large platforms I’m missing out as well.

As a new person to saddle hunting I overlooked them for 2 years. I just wanted to encourage others to try everything they can. It’s half the fun and you might find something you like haha!
Stop putting ideas out there,my setup is just fine...This site drives me crazy.

I was healing a back injury this year, and so I was a leaner around 75% of the time and would only sit to take a break.

I'm getting better, so I might sit more next year.

However, I've always heard ROS aren't great for leaners. Is this true? Any tips to make leaning with a ROS more comfortable on longer hunts?

ankles at 135*, knees at 135*, hips at 135*. Distribute weight evenly across all three joints.

if you have a weak core, leaning will test it and could cause you to be uncomfortable. Lots of people have different muscle imbalances and this is one major reason why some saddles or platforms are more comfortable for some than others.

ROS guys, how do you keep from stepping in between the steps and slipping?

You’d be surprised how good your body is at executing tasks on muscle memory, and without looking. I have a YouTube video of me shooting a deer off of a ring of steps. The moment of truth unfolded over a minute or two. You can see my feet in the video, and it looks like I’m slipping. What’s actually happening is I’m feeling with my toes to find the best balance on the steps. I don’t remember doing it. You just do it.

ring of steps has never cost me an animal because I slipped, nor have I slipped in a way that scared me. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thought it was that new saddle that made it so comfortable?

the new a saddle made my butt, hips and lower back more comfortable, the ROS gave me some relief on my legs/feet that was nice.

Thoughts on ROS on large trees?

Not ideal in that scenario, to me anyway.

What are guys doing to make it work for them on big trees in big country?

Saddle hunter for two seasons now. I use ROS and have no desire to try anything else. I have learned different foot positions on the ROS or a combination of the ROS and my top step that eliminate any problem of foot pain or fatigue. Plus to give your feet a break put more of your weight in the saddle. I am a ROS guy 100%.

I have a set of the Ameristeps but I just always felt I made a ton of noise getting them set up. I recently got some squirrel steps, now those are sweet. I’m a sucker for compact gear.

My ROS is also Ameristeps. They do make a little noise, but if you're careful it can be kept minimal. The good news is that they sound little like rattling antlers! Lol

A platform has its place. I have used the xl more this year than I did my original predator but most of the time I used a ring of steps. I’ve settled on 1” wide sky hooks. I like squirrel steps but the 1” wide steps are a little more stable and still fit in my pouch of choice.

I’m afraid to ask because I’m sure it’ll cost me but what are these sky hooks you speak of?

I don’t disagree, I use both. For comfort I liked my ameristeps ( should’ve kept them) but the way I pair mine up I like the compactness of the squirrels.

My ros are on a 7' strap and I've been on a few trees where I was literally on the end of the strap but I was still easily able to shoot the full 360 around the tree.

The only thing that changes is the step placement around the tree. On an average sized tree say 12- 18" I set the steps at roughly 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 o'clock positions and I center myself between 5 and 7. For those at the strap length max the step placement may only be from the 4 to 9 o'clock positions so the distance between steps remains the same as when on I'm in average sized trees. Being able to walk to the 9 o'clock position allows me to shoot my strong side to at least 1 o'clock.

There's no way a platform is gonna let you get that far around these giant trees to shoot your strong side when your feet are limited to the platform side at 6 o'clock.
