They are a stretchy material designed to fit tight to the skin.
It will likely fit

It said the the 5x was for 44 - 46" chest.. I've got a 56" chest.
I wonder if I could cut the sides and wear it like a safety vest.

The largest size fits a 56 chest. No sleeves just a vest and it stretches. No need to cut it
