It's just...a little crush... - Review of the JX3 Hybrid Saddle

with this hybrid, it looks like your best bet is sitting down, or even that you may be limited to that.

How does that feel on your knees? with me leaning against a tree, even having knee pads on, can be pretty uncomfortable. Mainly bc of the need to always keep them together. They naturally want to kick out and go around the tree.

What are your findings on this matter?

To take a shot you can sit down or stand up if you have something to stand on. I can stand on the top of my stick. I have a short 12 inch stick to stand on too

My knees never touch the tree

I made my third hunt out of the hybrid. The only tree that would work is a 14-16" diameter hackberry. It had one branch at about 25', and another at about 30-31'. I needed to be right between those branches, which came off the low side of a fairly severe lean. Not ideal, but we're here to kill deer not kiss babies.

Upon getting to my tree and preparing for what would be a climb stretching the limits of the aiders and stepps, on a tree with little bumps all over the bark that would make tying stepps and lineman and tether time consuming annoying, I discovered I left my bow hoist. Also, it, was 1230 and I was preparing for a 6 hour sit. I probably would have bowed out with my kestrel, and found a different tree in a different area.

I ended up using a nite ize gear tie and strapping bow to back of the hybrid. I decided to climb with the seat hanging down since it was already going to be a disaster and give feedback on that.

I put my stepps right at forehead height (6'), and actually stretched my knaider out to where it was in front of my kneecap not below it. I was able to climb fairly smoothly even at the stretched out distance, and the seat of the hybrid hanging down. I go SLOW when I climb anyway. This helps me concentrate and keep my lineman's tight, and not make a bunch of noise. I hung my fourth stepp about 10 minutes into the climb. Next, I hung my tether above the first branch, pulled tight, and swapped lineman's over the branch. Then I hung my fifth stepp and ameristep platform combo about 1' above the branch. I stepped up, swapped my tether to just above the next branch, and sat down on the bottom side of the lean right between the branches where I planned to be.

This is where I encountered a couple problems. With my tether on the left side of the branch, it made shooting from 1 oclock to about 8 oclock just fine. But I couldn't swing around to shoot behind me to shoot because of gravity/the branch interfering with tether/the lower branch hitting my butt. It took a minute to think through it - I hooked linemans back up, dropped down and moved my platform another 1' up. This allowed my butt to clear the branch below me. Then I climbed back up and swapped my tether to the right side of the branch(it came off tree directly above my head in optimal position) and up about 1'. This gave me the length in tether to still make the shot to 1 oclock easily, but now allowed me to freely rotate to 6 oclock to shoot. Then for offside shot - this is the cool part - I could hook my heel on right stepp, pull my body counterclockwise against the fork on the tree, and my left foot hit just right on that branch below me. I could then pivot basically standing against that branch, and shoot my whole weak side - fighting gravity. It wasn't easy, but it was doable, and doable quiet.

I would not even have considered hunting this tree in my saddle, because I would have been forced to sit the high side of the tree, and be in a very exposed position to where deer would likely be coming out. If it was dry, and I could hear deer coming before I saw them, maybe I could sneak to low side of tree in the cover. But If I was forced to sit there motionless with my tether basically directly overhead instead of out in front of me, I don't know if i could do it. With the hybrid, I just extended the fork and sat back for a very comfortable hunt.

I hooked my bow to the two plastic snap hooks John included on the back of the waistbelt that I didn't even notice were there. Put the string in them, so the bow hung down around my butt. The climb down was just as quiet and comfortable as the way up. Does the seat get in the way in the down position - yeh, it's obviously better to have folded up. But I didn't make any noise, any unnecessary motion, and made it up just fine.

pretty much everything I bring on a hunt can fit in the space between the mesh and the plastic frame. I know this because I hang every accessory on the way in like you see in the video in one of my previous posts. But when I'm done, I just throw all that crap in the space between and roll out. That's super convenient.

One of these days I'll actually see and kill a deer out of this thing. Sitting still, for long periods of time, will certainly help that effort. Incredibly happy so far.

Forgive me I didn't read all of the posts, but are there any bigger guys using this?

I'm 6'5" 290# and looking to get into saddle hunting after I saw the Guido's Web and now that the JX3 has replaced it I'm looking at getting into it even more now.

If it helps. It is wider than my old guidos web large. He made on size to fit all. Call John he is helpful

Holy cow! You're definitely pushing the limits of any commercially available hunting equipment.

I'm waiting to hear from John on where the weight rating will settle out at. In the meantime - sit in a chair, and measure across the widest point of your hips. This, along with how wide of a chest/belly you have will determine how comfortable this is for you.

This is the response I recieved from him (in the attached picture). I'm down from 340# and still trying to get back down to around 250# or so.

Currently hunting out of either my Summit Goliath or XOP Maximus.

Yeah, I bought a guides out of the classifieds because of this post.....maybe a hybrid next year. You guys suck! :)

Sorry but the hybrid is a huge upgrade.

I used my guidos on 20 % of my sits. The hybrid will be at least double that The frame and how well it carries and it is easier to shoot from.
I would rather buy a hybrid over a mystery ranch pop up if I had to choose

It's all good. Looking for something for those 0 degree days in Vermont so i still get out. I think this will work for this year. You think I'll at least like it?

I liked it for long sits when it was cold and for gun hunting. I used it for just about every turkey hunt on the ground

Awesome! That's exactly what I bought it for. Rifle and muzzle loader. :) thanks!

You'll love the web for gun hunting for sure. It's just lacking in two areas like @Ontariofarmer said - frame pack and hot hunting. I would have paid double for mine seeing how much I'll use it. Assuming it doesn't just fall apart or kill me, It's an absolute winner. It suits my needs exactly. I can't say I'd sell the MR Pop-up now - but I will probably use the Hybrid on the majority of my hunts. I can still see myself using the kestrel a lot, and needing to pack deer. Also, that's a very useful backpack for travel I found on my early season scouting trip.

I wont sell my web more than likely so I can show friends the hybrid concept without loaning it and as a backup.

You'll love the web. A few mods are necessary in my opinion - adjustable fork, replace tether with rope tether, and male/male strap to make a waist belt for carrying. I'm about to go tinker with my web and see if I can figure out lineman's belt option with seat folded up. That's the third huge advantage of the hybrid.

Im actually watching your review right now and I have a quick question. Now I usually get pretty warm walking in where I do and just wear my merino for the most part and pack in my warmer outer layers. Now will I be able to throw on my vest or coat once I'm up in the tree with the JX3 hybrid?

From what I'm seeing it's not looking like it, but I could be missing how I could stay attached with a linesman belt and then take the back pack straps off?

Let me know what you think, thank you
First hunt in La this season. Just when I thought I had my system with the saddle all dialed in, this little love nugget showed up.

View attachment 6971

I'll post a thorough review after a day hiking/hunting with it. But it has far exceeded my initial impressions, and did so in about 25 seconds of holding it. My web holds a place in my heart, but that place is not south Louisiana in October...

Video in later post but also wanted to get it here for those folks that won’t go past the first post!

I try to pressure everyone who has this concern with sweating while climbing into the following:

I'm a sweaty guy - I sweat all the time when it's hot, full body, the whole thing. I get it.

But I don't sweat when I climb my tree fully clothed in my winter layers. This is for four reasons -

I don't wear my layers walking in, which you already don't do. - check

I take 3-5 minutes to cool down when I arrive at my tree before I get dressed - ?

I practice my climbing methods throughout offseason, and especially right before the season to get the swing of it - ?

I climb very slow and deliberately. Not only is it safer, but it's quieter, and you don't get your heart rate/body temp up. - ?

I can't stress it enough, in my opinion, you should be able to climb 20' when it's cold outside, without getting super sweaty when fully clothed. If not, you may be too out of shape to be climbing trees to hunt. Or, you're not comfortable enough with your equipment, or rushing, both of which are unsafe and asking for trouble.

Having said all of that, I'll hop off of my soap box. In the web or the Hybrid, you can put layers on or off easily. I hunt with the shoulder straps off, and flipped behind the frame. This isn't necessary, but can be done so long as leg straps and waist strap is in place in order to put on a jacket. Pants can be donned as well, Leave shoulder straps hooked up. Then just undo one leg strap at a time and get them close to up, unclip waist bad, shimmy pants up, reclick and in business. You'd have to do some real gymnastics to fall out of this seat, regardless of all of the ways to keep it attached to you. The seat and back are attached permanently to the webbing frame that completely surrounds you.

I'm not pimping this thing because I'm being paid or have a hidden agenda. I'm like you guys. The hybrid is a game changing piece of equipment. If there were bugaboos like this, I would let you all know. It's expensive, and I believe it's my duty to help others considering writing that check know the pros as well as the cons.

Right now I have one single con - I'm narrow, and a 17-18" seat would be plenty wide enough for me instead of 20". That's it. It sticks out one inch farther than necessary on either side of me. The only drawback I've seen with it.

I will give a very comprehensive review and comparison to my minimal saddle set up after my week long hunting vacation next week. I will be using the hybrid as well as my kestrel/mystery ranch combo to hunt public land. Lots of long walks, rough terrain, packing critters out, etc.

Thank you for the honesty. One of the things I liked is the 20" wide seat when reading about it lol. I fully plan on practicing with this (whenever I'm able to get my hands on it next year) in the back yard with my feet about 6" off the ground. No plans on any saddle hunting till next year as I have only just started getting serious about researching this style of hunting. I've read about it and almost bought a Guidos web a few years ago, but went with hang on and sticks.

I know I'm a bigger guy and this might not work out for me, but I still want to at least try it and see how I like it.

In my opinion, this saddle is the easiest to put on a vest or jacket while in the stand and at height. I always take off the shoulder straps once I am all settled in, if you prefer to leave them on for the duration of your hunt then you will need to take them off while putting on a jacket. Then, to put on a jacket I simply loosen the backrest up so it leans back while I stay sitting upright. Then I undo the hip belt. Put on the jacket and tuck it down in the back and sides and then the front and zip it. Hook the waste belt back up and cinch the backrest back up to your preferred angle. Easy Peasy.
