Whipping it firmly sinks it in enough so that it isn’t much wider than the rope after the melting. Before whipping I sew the twine around twice, going over and under the braids to lock the whipping from just sliding off the end.

so you are putting the whipping over the end as well?
 
Yes, on ones I was using to test hitches, after figuring out how to tie the hitches using a stopper at the end, it was possible to more accurately compare different cords not having a preset length. The covered end eliminates any snagging while tying, speeds things along.
