Knee Pads

I currently own the arcteryx in black. I enjoy the way that they feel but have not worn them for an extended hike. For the guys who do own them and have worn them previously. is it more comfortable to put these over the base layer and under the outer layer of clothing? Or is it more comfortable to wear them over the outer layer of clothing so that they can be put on once in/at the tree. I haven't practiced putting them on in the tree, I always wear them climbing during practice.

Thanks guys for the heads up on the knockoffs. Just ordered a set off eBay.
 
I also just bought a set of harbor freight ones a few weeks ago but have not been in a tree with them yet to report back on how they worked.
