Know your knots...

How many times a year does everyone throw their rope up a crotch? :mask:

I heard it was easier to use a pole...
I use Sterling HTP which is quite stiff enough, thank you very much. :mask:
Edit: Now I don't know if we are talking about this, that or the other thing.

Have you given up on your pimp staff?

I have been using a crotch :mask: lately to get my rope up, using presets, so I brought no pimpstick of any type.. A joke doesn't come to mind just now. I hunted close to my truck last time since I thought about being a mile downhill and the drag back. I used a figure eight knot to tie to the crotch.

What about false crotch?
That's what he was calling it.m I did some research. The technical name for it is a adjustable friction saver. Rope Logic makes one. $85 . Tree squeeze is another term. Buckingham makes one. $109

I’ve always used a simple knot called“bunny ears”, works well to keep my shoes from coming off...

You're both right. A false crotch just means the rope isn't running over a natural crotch. The friction saver, tree squeeze are the specific devices that can be used as a false crotch...I'm sure there's a few jokes to be made in there somewhere :D

I had to look up false crotch and could find information on lowering branches for arborists. I don't think saddle hunters have any use for that.

Actually they're very useful.

It sounds like a joke, but upon reflection I actually use castration bands for false-crotch purposes.

You're right, using a false crotch for rigging isn't helpful for hunters. Implementing one in a climbing system is what we're discussing.

I haven't found anything on the internet. Start discussing so I can learn.

Yes in the examples of the rescue class, in this thread, they were talking about capsizing the knot. This can only be achieved by tying the knot loosely not dressing it,and not adding a stopper not. A parlor trick
As I said the Figure 8 is the appropriate knot for our purposes. Even poorly tied, crossed lines, undressed, short tail, it is highly unlikely to fail.
As I've stated elsewhere in this forum the three or four knots that you need for saddle hunting you should be able to tie in the dark tired on autopilot 100% of the time.
I would agree if you're incapable of tying a bowline or any other knot, 100% of the time you shouldn't be using it for life support.
A bowline doesn't come untied because of its properties, but a lack of understanding of those properties. I wouldn't know how to tie a bowline improperly, but it wouldn't surprise me if I've tied it ten thousand times , literally.
I don't believe in fear-mongering. I believe you should make informed decisions, assess the limitations, and use the appropriate tool for the task at hand.
In Swift water rescue the most important knot is the not-a-knot.
I have tied a Bowline so many time over 35 years as a Pile Driver it's ridiculous. But like I said before it was never used as knot for life support. I would not recommend it either.

I'm pretty sure the one he had was the Rope Logic. I was discussing knots and this thread with him and he brought out his false crotch. He put it on tree, cinched it up tight, both rings were about 2 fists apart, His lanyard(tether) went through the rings and back down to biner on his bridge. Simple system. Knotless, everything sewn in, strong. Trusts his life on it everyday. He also said tree rope is much more durable than climbing rope. It take alot of abuse.
