hey everyone

im new to saddle hunting this year and need to upgrade my pack. after reading all the backpack post , Im leaning towards the Kuiu venture..im 6'2 and will get the large size in either or .. I need advice on which size to get for my needs. I've never seen these two in person and I have watch countless YouTube vids about it.. other the the slightly larger size and material , would the bigger one be over kill. ?????

I hunt for deer in ontario and my current pack doesn't support the weight comfortably on the long hikes.. here's what im working with
- 4 helium sticks 30" ,im sure I will mod it later on
- predator platform
- few knives, deer calls, small first aid ,range finder, Binos, bottle of water , few other items
- necessary ropes, biners, daisy chain and storage pouch for it.
- room for a few layers of clothes when walking so im not sweating on the way, gloves , balaclava ,toque
- knee pads
- harness/saddle if I decide not to wear on the walk.
and my bow in hand with the option to hook up to bag. I did see the attachment they offer.

I feel like I would be dragging the deer out or close to road/atv routes most of the time but don't want to limit myself just in case I have to quarter it up.

I know that this is a subjective topic based on personal fit / needs but any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

I am interested as well (that is close to my setup -- I have 3 hawks though) -- thx!

I have the 1800 as well as the pack frame system. Here;'s my opinion. the 18000 and the 2300 are both nice packs, but they really aren't designed to carry a heavy load on the outside of the pack with the tiny little framestays they come with. First off, the 1800 is really small in my opinion. Think 5th grade school bookbag small. I only use it when I go on light hikes. like some really light rain gear, first aid kit, nalgene, light jacket, gloves, hat, snacks, and that's about it. Now I tend to bring alot of gear in with me in my pack when i hunt, and I completely change out of the clothes I walk in with, once I get in because I sweat insanely quickly, even in 30 degree temps.
I use the actual carbon frame pack system with the ultra 4000 pack, which they no longer make. I'm a large in everything, and in my 4000 I fit, my sitka fanatic bib and jacket, my sitka lightweight base layer and top, stika heavyweight base and top, sitka baseball hat, balaclava, midweight beanie, neck muff, extra pair of wool socks. Then rangefinder, binos, grunt tube, clippers, bleat can, fold flat montana decoy, estrous, wicks, steel flask of coffee, and I can usually also jam my Cruzr XC saddle in there too with tether, linemans belt, pouches. Then I strap my 4 hawk helium minis with double amsteel aiders on each to the side of the pack and then my platform (either a treesuit, OOAL soloscout, or ridgerunner) to the front of the pack.
The 4000 is jammed to the brim with that. Yes, I know it's a lot, but I'm just giving you perspective.

thx for the info ffastfzr
my pack now is small and has been great for long hikes just not the best for heavy load. it worked out great for turkey hunt and scout / stalk with a folding chair if im not going to far. this is what it looks like with the sticks sooo you can see why I need the upgrade for saddle hunting.. after a few km with it filled up , it weighs down on my shoulders pretty good without good support.

you have me rethinking things now.

if you look in this thread above i posted a front view a year or so ago. different platform though

I have the 1800 and it fits my Predator platform, Saddle and a light jacket on the inside, It has plenty of space and straps for your sticks on the outside, I can roll up some bibs and buckle on the bottom. I agree it is a smaller pack but it works for me on long walks back to where the deer are, I hardly even know I have it on. The only problem I had with the pack is when I was gun hunting. The straps are to thick with my jacket on, I can’t shoulder my gun completely and take an effective shot. It would be nice to have one pack for Bow/Gun hunting.

I looked at both but ended up with the MR Pop-Up 38. I do not want to pack meat in the bag. I like the lid to keep essentials close at hand. I can easily carry sticks and platform on the front or in the load shelf. The bag can carry my bibs and jacket and whatever else I may need on a late season hunt. It can also collapse pretty small for early season. The adjustable yoke is also really nice and ensures the waist belt is on your hips.

It's overkill for many and I could get away with a smaller bag but I like having options.
