Lack of penetration has me going to a two blade.

He also recognizes not all people always make the perfect shots. Human.
The age old question becomes where/how are things most likely to go wrong.

We all screw up. Miss by enough and all's fine other than the lack of a punched tag. Miss back and the deer's gonna die (but might be a challenge to track) miss forward and the shoulder comes into play, with more chances for the deer to survive.

Heavy tackle increases the chance to turn a survivable hit into a harvest. Expandables might improve recovery odds (and time) of fatal bad hits further back. We should all be planning for our own failures when we set up our bows. If things go right there's not gonna be a problem either way.

Matt, you said some great stuff there! 3 great points to consider:
1) Miss back and the deer is going to die.
2) Miss forward and the shoulder comes into play, with more chances to survive.
3) Heavy tackle increases the chance to turn a survivable hit into a harvest.
4) Expendables help with bad shots back.
5) PLAN ON FAILURE WHEN SETTING UP YOUR BOW.

Those are great points. I hear it all the time, "i'd rather a 3" hole from a rage than a 1" from a coc head.". The main problem with that logic is that you wont get a 3" hole through the shoulder.

I also have quite a few tracking friends who tell me, "if you're going to miss, miss back". He said he will find a gut shot deer 100 out of 100 if you don't bump them. It's a 6 hour minimum for him on a gut shot.

This thread is a train wreck.

Go to 2 blade, single bevel if it gives you confidence. Also, if you are interested in trying a good one piece, 100 gr, three blade out (VPA), let me know and I will send them to you (on me, no charge). I switched to Muzzy Ones (easier to find at Wal Mart and don’t need the VPA anymore

PM me and I can get you pics of the heads. What we do, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t humane or ethical, so I say hunt with what gives you the confidence in pulling the trigger.

You are a smart dude, don’t let others opinions bother you too much.

Get back out there and drop one for all of us on here rooting for you!!

It still should be common sense...it's like people just suddenly noticed that a deer's leg/shoulder has a funky angle that leaves a nice patch of vitals exposed and overreacted to that knowledge.
Yup and when they quarter away all you have to get through is ribs. Do the animal and yourself a favor and only take high percentage shots. Don't suffer the animal and spoil your season. Build strong arrows.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your setup. I have the same draw length and around the same arrow weight. I'm using the Ser Razors this year. I think people get caught up in broadhead selection. Just find a sharp one that flies well and move on with life. I'm as guilty as anyone about it. I think most people just need more reps with their bow to be proficient. But we are shooting at animals that move, add a little buck fever, and stuff happens.
