My daughter sat quite patiently and almost something that resembled quietly for just over two hours in a ground blind this evening. She ate snacks and drank way too much blue drank, practiced closing one eye to look through the rangefinder and crossbow sight (she needs an eye patch but it’s damn cute to watch her struggle to shut just one eye), we learned how to identify blue jays by their calls, postulated what the hell the squirrels were chittering about, practiced weapons safety, ate more snacks, read a 2015 D&DH article about doe matriarchy (for real, 2nd grade, she read every word silently to herself then updated me on the social discrepancies between bucks and does), and she capped off the last half hour by silently belting her favorite original tune into the top end of a monopod. We did see a squirrel snack on an acorn at 16yds and when we exited the woods, I knew there would be some deer in the field thanks to my cell cam so I pointed and said “I told you we’d see deer tonight”. That seemed enough for her. She said “can we go tomorrow?”
Why, yes. Yes we can.
I dunno if that qualifies as live from the saddle but it sure was a great night of hunting.
