LIVE from the Saddle 2024

Just had 6 does at 40 yards and it took them 20 minutes of standing and looking around to get to 20 yards before one spooked and took all of them with her. These deer are skittish after being shot at by the orange army

Edit: I'm pretty sure 1 of the does stepped on a stick and that's what spooked them

Had 12 -15 does and 4 - 6 bucks come down a field edge on the neighbors property I don't have permission for. They fed on the edge of the field and 2 bucks sparred for the last few min of light at about 40 yards or so. First time I've got to see 2 bucks go at it like that and it was pretty cool.

Also got to see the buck I missed in November and he has a sweet reverse mowhawk haircut from my broadhead about halfway down his back. Only thing that would've made this hunt better was a shot opportunity buitan awesome hunt none the less

Last allowed Sunday... ia was stuck on the can when this came in this morning

Always the saddest day of the year, but I'm finally tagged out. Freezer is full.

Maiden hunt of the 257 Roberts and did the job with aplomb.

Get a break from the woods for a few weeks. Then after the holidays begin to scout like crazy and maybe assemble some pieces of the puzzle I missed this season.

Commandment 10 has begun already.

Next year's hunt begins the minute this season's hunt ends.

257 Roberts is a great little cartridge. I've taken several deer with mine. I like the 100 Nosler Partition pushed fast.

I used 115 gr ballistic tip. Partitions are superb but their price is asinine
That should be a great choice too. They toughened up the ballistic tips a while back, so they are less like a varmint bullet than they were. At 257 Roberts velocities they should work great. I had good luck with the 117 grain Sierra Gameking also for a heavier weight.

I was leary for a long time about using them, but half the guys up camp have used them for years with excellent results. There's almost always two holes.

The old ones were very fragile, like a varmint bullet. They toughened them up quite a while back. If you cross section a new one you can see they have a very substantial base. A lot of people hesitate to use them due to the reputation they got in the early days of not exiting and causing a lot of meat damage. Now if you put the same one in a 257 Weatherby it might be a different story.

Scout. Scout. And scout some more. That’s what kills deer in the end. Nice work!

I’m gonna give up hunting one of my better pieces because it’s too far away to get good time in scouting. Closer to home might not be quite as good but I can be far more productive and efficient.

You’re an inspiration. Gotta respect the grind.
