LIVE from the saddle 2025

No longer in the saddle but I saw a surprising number of deer today, just nothing close enough to the tree I chose. Hopefully will get back at it soon, today was a success though boot blankets success, scouting to find new deer success and found and easier access trail to get back there in the future as well

I think beaver dammed this at some point and the flooding killed all the timber? Tracks and trails all through it ...

I'm sure you can tell the difference but to the untrained eye tracks in mud and clay can be deceiving.
They can look fresh for weeks...

Your Tinks' isn't leaking is it? :confounded:

Can you still smack cottontails in NY?
Bring the .22 when you scout.
Yep, rabbits, squirrels, grouse, fox, coyote, raccoon. I’ve eaten raccoon, not the worst thing in the world. Was over a fire though and some charred pieces weren’t my favorite. Haven’t got the stomach for fox or coyote though. Maybe if I’m real hungry…..

Using the hybrid setup but sitting to keep my ass warm. 13 degree hunting and I'm only wearing Stratus outer layer, you can go colder than they have listed. I have warmers on bottom and tip of shoe covered by insulating "sock", it works wonders. Didn't see any tonight but same sit yesterday and they came behind me at 74yds out of the thicket and didn't come way to the field. Will only be hunting this spot till end of year as its my property and sits Screenshot_20250104_200625_Gallery.jpg

Dogs of any variety are perpetually off the menu for me.

IMG_6563.jpegFirst hang of 2015, first sit in this tree for the season, hunting to fill my last doe tag. I hate climbing this tree, but it’s always worth it. I got up pretty easily this time though and I’m only now getting cold after an hour with two left to hunt. This view is the best on the property and I have the most diversification of wildlife in this area. Already saw a gray squirrel (vastly outnumbered by fox squirrels), a few fox squirrels, a red bellied woodpecker, some cardinals, and a couple of northern flickers. Also unfortunately a feral cat.
I can see nothing and everything all at once from this tree, and the snow makes it even better. When I see deer down here, they really seem to just materialize from the mist more so than in other parts of our woods. I’m about 12 yds off a superhighway (pictured) and 25 yds from the field edge, in the pocket of about 3 properties’ junction. First yearling doe or older within 25 yds is meeting the grim reaper.

Add 3 does (out of range), another gray squirrel, and an owl (possibly horned, but more likely a barred or snowy) to the mix. The latter glided horizontally just below the canopy for a few seconds before perching on a branch and studying me at like 15 yds, then took off lazily to find its hunting limb for the night. It was kinda like when two bowhunters are coming/going from the same public tract and quickly exchange pleasantries in the parking lot. Kinda cool.
