Lone wolf hand climber seat

Another thing I found that works to hold the arms down and also give a foot "stirrup": use a cam buckle strap! Attach each piece to the platform with the loops on their end (one on each side under an arm). Then cinch it tight. The strap should go over and across the arms. You can them slip your feet under the strap and use it as a "stirrup".

I played with this some more on Tuesday (yeah, had the day off to vote  ) and simply tying the seat to the tree makes it bomb proof. I'm going to try to tie it off further out away from the tree to a point more below the seat on the trunk and it should be even more stable.

Here we go :)

I really like using the LW seat as the platform but I am new and so do not know any better yet from trying other methods

You should NOT push sideways on the edge of the thing - to be safe. You CAN lean way out to the side as long as your boot is ON the platform and not on the side.

For shooting 3:00 to 6:00, you can just turn around with your back to the tree while standing on the platform - like you would do on a regular climbing platform. Carrying just the LW climber seat is so light and handy. I put the belt strap across my shoulder to carry it --> has a built-in carrying system.

CONS: You will have to adjust the belt on the climber seat/platform tighter at some point as you go higher, as the tree trunk tapers. This is annoying because it is mostly done one handed while the thing is held to your feet using the foot straps that you fashion. You could be left high up and hanging if this is bungled.

I am still looking at other methods...

I was just talking about trying this with a friend last night. I'm interested to hear how others testing goes. Do you bear hug the tree going up?

No, you hang in your saddle and advance the platform. After your advance the platform you stand on it and move your tree strap up, and repeat the process.

Any idea what the this weighs? I checked online and found that the seat weighs 6 pounds. I assume that is with the cushion seat installed.

Babshaft,
Is yours the XOP, or the LW?
I heard the XOP was lighter (and cheaper), I heard they wouldn't be making any more.

The other thing to consider is either attaching a bungee cord or whoopie sling around the tree behind it or tethering it to yourself somehow. If you take weight off it for some reason it can easily free fall to the base of the tree. This was a common problem with bases of early climbing stands. The base would ratchet down the tree leaving the hunter sitting on the seat up the tree with no way to get down.

I just picked one up and plan to use it this year as my SRT platform. It's light and easy to sling over a shoulder for the hike in and I'll pull it up after I've climbed about 6 feet shy of my tie in point. I'll attach it to the tree while free hanging and then continue up to put my weight on it. It's here that I worry about knocking it off and having to go back down for it.

Mine’s the old style (straight lines) lone wolf. The XOP is the same weight as the old style and slightly lighter than the new style from lone wolf.

You’re right about production. I messaged XOP and Cody said they won’t have a hand climber top available until 2019.

You’re bang on about having a tether for it. If you lose it you’re pooched.

Check out ckossuth’s method of tightening it down if you haven’t yet. Should be a good solution for you if you’re using it for SRT.

Has anyone heard of this breaking under tension? The arms tend to dig into the "traction belt" and I've heard of these breaking mid climb.

I was in Lowe’s the other day and spotted some 1/16 wall 1” square tubing. I bought three feet of it and made arms for the Summit cable.

I can safely say I don’t like it at all. The cable tightened all the way is still too big for my favorite sized trees. I guess I can drill more holes spaced out in the arms. The way it is though sucks.

I'm going to do that. I'm going to take the arms into work and put a couple more holes in the arms for adjustment. Let you know tomorrow.
