That’s what I plan on doing. I have 9 months to mess around with stuff before my season opens again.
 
For what it’s worth, I rarely use the standard SS needle and thread. The needle is very aggressive and may cut some fibers in the fabric.

I use some heavy duty sewing machine needles and heavy duty thread.

I’d check out the sewing resources thread (no pun intended) for some thread recommendations.

Agree that the blade point needles that come with the speedy stitcher can damage your webbing or rope. I've used heavy duty, round point (or ball point) sewing machine needles. They are short, but work. This looks like a better option: https://www.sailrite.com/Needles-for-Awl-Straight-4

Thread should be heavy duty polyester. I've used nylon thread (it stretches too much and degrades in sunlight) and I've used dyneema/kevlar/PE braided fishing line (same stuff Amsteel is made from). That is apparently not recommended for webbing because it won't stretch at all and can cut the webbing's fibers.

I have used the speedy stitcher with uposlstery thread using a regular denim needle for a sewing machine. I’ve used 30ln braid also. A denim sized needle that was a little longer would be nice.
