I couldn't agree more with @huntmore for many years I just still hunted(rifle) and shot whatever bucks I could find.....once I started to bow hunt though I realized to set up and see bucks coming past my tree I needed better hunting techniques.....The Internet is what led me to guys like Dan Infalt, @John Eberhart, Dr Grant Woods, Jim Ward, Jeff Sturgis, Bill Wink, Jim Brauker, Steve Bartylla, Dan Schmidt, etc, etc, I've only been a memeber here a short time and I'm learning every day from the members and staff, this forum has some pros that might not have YouTube channels but they are certainly here to help!

I photo shopped ur picture to show any newbies to this how (like when water flows over rocks) the wind coming over the top of a ridge will curl, it's this interface between the thermals and the wind over the leeward side......WIND-TUNNEL.gif

The 1/3 “rule” has been spot on for me in central KY where the hills/ridges are more prevalent and pronounced. However, in far western KY where its primarily flat(ish) farmland the bedding is more diverse

I was hunting a new swamp I found this year pretty aggressively using many things I have learned from Dan Infalt's YouTube channel and The Hunting Beast Forum. I was looking for a nice mature buck (Buster) I keep getting at night on a trail cam over a community scrape. This year he was shifting his bedding with the wind direction at the inlet end of this swamp always keeping enough water between him and me so I couldn't get close to him. First sit I had a good Idea of where he was... I tried to get too close and he busted me stepping in the water just 20 yards from the tree I was heading to. Second sit I held back a little and adjusted for the wind and he caught me unzipping my backpack to eat (no more food in the tree) I spilled my lunch out of the tree while trying to get to the bow he ran through water chest deep it was splashing over his antlers....it was interesting how he used natural barriers other than the top of a ridge to protect his back and his escape route was wet but he still got away. Just seeing that he lived another year in a heavily hunted piece of public made my day though....it's more about the hunt for me!buster.gif

The locals push this swamp weekly during rifle season with 4 drivers and 4-6 watchers and somehow Buster lets them bark on by(they bark like dogs while driving). My son and I were rifle hunting toward the end of the season and I went down there to pull a trail cam and maybe wind bump him up to my son....meanwhile..... the local gang made a drive at the same time..... Buster came out with a doe but my son didn't see him in time to get a clean shot, but yeah... his day is close......maybe next year? I forgot to add that my son owns his own residential house framing company and has little time to hunt with me because he's too busy on week ends, so just getting a glimpse of Buster did much to make his season better. Where we hunt in New York the deer population is horribly low and seeing mature bucks can be difficult to say the least many people here shoot anything and poachers are killing does too.
