Early season....what are you doing to keep the pests away and NOT throw chemical scent down wind?

Permethrin on clothes and Thermacell running or stay at home. I don't think there's any other options out there right now.
I'll hunt drier areas on higher hills that have a strong breeze that the mosquitos find less favorable too.

Same as above. I will only run the Thermacell when I hear them buzzing my ear/face. Once I drive them off I’ll turn it off. Rinse/repeat as needed.

I haven't had any negative experiences using a Thermacell, but that really doesn't answer your specific question. My experience with the Thermacell also evidently doesn't account for negative encounters that were outside of my vision, although if I'm using a Thermacell the bugs are bad enough that I probably wouldn't be out otherwise, so there's that... Permethrin/Permanone works for ticks, and is odorless when dry, as the propellant contains the odor.

I do know people who use them for spring bear in Canada, so that should say something.

I haven’t had any negative experiences with a thermocell. Wearing a leafy suit helps too. If you are hunting with the right wind, it shouldn’t be a problem. During turkey I’ve had deer walk right up on me after I’ve soaked myself in DEET, so I’m not sure if it deters them.

Permethrin on my clothes, especially the cuffs, collars, and pants legs. I also treat my Bonnie hat I wear early season and that seems to help keep them away from my face. One other thing I’ve done before is to treat a bandana and wear that around my neck. I have also used Picaridin and it works really well and won’t destroy nylon like Deet. And I carry a thermacell that I use when necessary.

Ever since I started using permethrin on my clothes, including on my hat and face mask, I don’t have problems with skeeters. I don’t want to breathe in whatever the thermacell is putting out so have never tried that….

thermacell. cant hunt early season without it down here...Ive read somewhere that the fresh earth scented pads gave them a bad headache and i feel like i experienced the same, but then again i have chronic headaches....just worth mentioning...no issues spooking deer with the scent (that im aware of lol)

Here in Central FL swamps, oak hammocks and palmetto chops I usually wear a Shannon’s Bug Tamer bug mesh jacket, treated clothes with permithrin, and use a thermacell

Sometimes 2 thermacells

Been doing all this for over 15 yrs and done fine killing pretty good FL deer on public.

I never go without chemicals. Permithin and thermacell. Why do you want to buck what works?

I hunt the saltwater marshes in Maryland and always do permethrin pre hunt and run two thermacells. That being said I tried the new Sitka equinox guard line of clothes while scouting in august and it is incredible. I didn’t spray any spray and didn’t use a thermacell and didn’t get bit by one mosquito or black fly. That clothing is worth its weight in gold. And if anyone doesn’t believe me I was wading through thigh deep swamps for hours and the bugs wouldn’t touch me. It was insane, won’t go in the woods without it now during early season

Yeah, Thermacell is THE go to. I’m not sweating the chemicals downwind, because my human scent is already downwind and between those….well, it just doesn’t matter. Maybe the chemicals will cover my human scent. Refill those fuel cells and pads for pennies. Burn baby burn!

I’m certainly not the original genus here. YouTube is your friend (isn’t it always!). Just search YouTube for ”Refill Thermocell butane carteridges” or “Refill Thermocell pads”. Lots of videos that will demo how to set yourself up. Good Luck!
