Monkeys Tail Tie In

Just watched a vid splicing double braid like predator. Little confusing, but doesnt look that hard. Ill order some and do the splicing myself as $25 a splice seems pricey for what I saw in the video. What wasnt clear is how long the fid is for that size rope? Ill be ordering a fid with the rope, need to know how long the bury is to calculate feet needed.
Good luck. @flinginairos and I think @bowhunter15 had a ton of fun splicing the predator. The consensus has been it's better to pay for a splice :tearsofjoy:

OK so after a quick search Red....I found lots on what you speak of. lol So Yale Bandit is easy, but appears its not made any longer?
Correct, occasionally someone finds somewhere online that still has some.

None that I know of. People are paying for splices lol.
Bummer my pocket book really wants me to do the splice myself but never spliced before I might have to just bit the bullet. I have found some bandit it is a good option to splice or is the predator that much better.

I think bandit and predator are pretty comparable ropes. I've never done it but the guys had much better luck splicing bandit.

Splicing the predator rope wasn't that bad once you've done it a couple of times. The trick is to "knead" the rope, or work it to loosen the wraps to give it room. First one I found words I never new I new! 2nd one I smiled after completion. 3rd one I was teaching my 15 year old like I was a professional! Oh and I made a fid out of an aluminum arrow to chase with the actual sized fid!

You're right, $25 per splice is pricey. But when Bowhunter15 (DIY Sportsman) says it is a total pain in the butt and it took him a coupla hours, that's enuff for me to get it factory spliced!! Lol

Can you find predator rope in manageable lengths or do you need to buy 100 feet?

I got mine at wesspur and paid the additional fee to have them spice it. 5" on one end (to girth hitch around saddle) and tight eye at tag end to connect to rope man biner/saddle. It's kinda pricey, but if the DIYSPORTSMAN had a tough time splicing it, then I took his advice.
I'm sure there are other sources, I just wanted mine spliced.

You can buy it by the foot, but check in the clearance rope section. Right now they have a 25’ piece for $19. Shipping, however, is $14!

Back to my original question. Can you get predator in 10 or 15 ft lengths or do you need to order 100 feet?

Yale Poison Ivy splices fairly well and was great for me this year. (I think the BlueMoon and Tropical Ivy are pretty much the same just different jackets). Spliced all four ends and liked it a lot better than knots.

As posted on the forum elsewhere, like others, I tried splicing Predator. FOR GOD’S SAKE MAN, DON’T DO IT! I tried three or four times and that rope kicked my ass. Ridiculous blisters. Maybe if it were new and had never been loaded it would have been better but thats doubtful.

This fella has a part I and II that I ran over and over again especially on my first go round. While he has a wand I tried fids without luck and ended up taking a coat hanger and making a snake out of it to use it similarly to the wand. Worked brilliantly and made the job easier.

kenn1320 has it right. You don't need to buy anything fancy. You are not taking a dynamic fall on a linemans belt, so you don't need the 22kn rated stuff. I wouldn't worry about side loading the carabiner either. Here is a shot of just using a carabiner and prussic loop. You could leave one end free in the prussic as I show or you can run a full loop. Point is that if you should slip off your stick, the monkey tail will catch the tree more reliably than just the belt. Here is a video of an electric lineman falling to the ground when his belt didn't catch (skip to minute 2:33).

My prussic loop is just 5/16" plain double braided dock line, not any of the fancy tech cord. It splices easily for a neat package.

This is what I want to do when using my climbing spurs. Thanks
