So after a long discussion with my wife, and another messed up bow hunt I've decided to not bowhunt my property any longer. I'm not selling it since its paid for, I'm just not going to hunt it. The neighbors can run amuck all they want. I've talked with every local government agency I can and there is nothing I can do short of killing dogs. Unfortunately in our part of Missouri there are no laws against dogs outside of the city.

Moving on. Thankfully we are blessed with huge amounts of public land here in Missouri that offer some good hunting. I'm going to try some late season scouting/hunting at a nearby lake that has about 16,000 acres of huntable land. I've duck hunted this place almost exclusively over the past 15 years or so. I have pretty much everything I need to hunt public (saddle, steps, boat, etc) and can navigate the place in the dark too. I will probably need to upgrade from my muddy stagger steps since they are a bit heavy but they'll do for now. I'm really kind of excited about trying this but honestly a little intimidated. I've hunted public before and did pretty good. My first deer with a bow was on public from a ground blind.

I guess I should give a shout out to nutterbuster who said in a post something about deer hunting vs deer hoping. That statement has kinda stuck with me and helped me make the decision.

So here goes. Not sure if I'm really up for it or not but I'm giving it a shot. Maybe you guys can answer all my newbie questions. And if there's anyone near SW Missouri that would like to join me give me a shout. We can learn together.

As for the kids, I've got some other options. I'm not taking my kids on public during gun season.

Tough pill to swallow but I'd probably do the same. It's not like public is w/o it's own issues, but there is so much space you can find a spot to enjoy the woods. I hunt both public and private. My enjoyment of public went up when I stopped leaving anything in the woods and just accepted that I had to carry in and out everything.

That really sucks you can’t use your own property in the way you want. Good idea to keep the kids off public during gun season.

I missed it, how much land do you own? Maybe lease it out for hunting and make some money. Let them deal with your neighbors and the dogs. lol

It's small. Only 10 acres but has been very productive up until the last couple of seasons.

having the RIGHT 10 acres is always better than the wrong 100! unless your neighbors dogs are chasing your deer away...

Reminds me of a story.

My dad had a work buddy who had a lease with crappie neighbors. They fought it out for a few years, and finally said buddy threw his hands up in the air. Then he had a thought...

Ole Dutch was a subcontractor dad's company did work with. Owned a paving crew. Dutch was a great guy and phenomenal at finishing concrete, but ROUGH. As in, was almost convicted of murder after splitting a cousin's head with an axe at a family reunion. Long story short, head-splitting is ok if the head you split is attached to an arm that's pointing a gun at you and your pregnant wife and you have a yard full of witnesses that can back the story that you didn't start the fight, you just decisively ended it. Especially when the split head's mother testifies that said head was drunk, full of sh!t, and had it coming...

Like I said. Rough crowd. Holdovers from a bygone era in southern history.

So dad's buddy goes to Dutch and asks him how he'd like a deer lease. Water and temporary power already there, feel free to invite friends and family. Shoot whatever, whenever. How much are you interested in paying? Yeah, that sounds fair to me...

Ole Dutch and Co. moved in and quickly set up some ramshackle camps to crash in when they were done riding ATVs, shooting deer, and drinking whiskey. The neighbors got unneighborly. Dutch was deeply hurt by their lack of sensitivity, culture, and refinement . Sherriff was called a few times.

And then, like magic, the neighbors quit leasing the neighboring property. Dad's buddy picked up the lease. Dutch and Co. stayed there for about 5 years until an uncle died who had some property and it came to Dutch. He picked up and left to greener grounds, and dad's buddy got to go back to his usual life.

Always a bigger fish.

Sorry to hear. Any particular reason you're going to hold on to it?

I get that it's paid off, but there's still property taxes.

So you are just going to give in and let them do what they want to on your property?

With only 10 ac I would fence it with field fence and if a dog got in then snares at the holes

Deer can easily jump in and out
