Must Have Duck Hunting Gear

Out in the middle in the layout boat
Gotcha. Derp.

No. Today was just a quick hunt with my dad. Really planned on it being more of a scouting trip but got lucky. I rammed the boat up in the shoreline like usual and bent all the grass over it and hunkered down. Had that lone drake flying about 10 minutes before light and shot him as soon as the clock rolled over to legal shooting time.

As the OP, I will check back in, I have been out for two duck hunts so far. No ducks shot but I did have some mallards land in an adjacent hole and put the sneak on them to no avail. I am headed back out this weekend with fingers crossed. All of your advice has helped me get the basics down for myself and I feel like I am slowly getting dialed in where I at least have a chance.

Make sure you have plenty of overhead cover and you’re hid well for mallards. They like to look for a reason not to land. If you’re calling don’t call in their face. Only call when they are turning away and or leaving.

Has anyone been out?

I went this weekend. We shot a mallard and two gadwalls this morning and I jump shot my first duck like that way off a little hole today around noon. I was pretty happy with 4. Nothing came in during the afternoon sit

I went this morning but didn’t fire a shot. The conversation and coffee were great however.

We have next to no ducks this year so I haven’t even bothered going. Never see it this bad in the last 15 years

I've still been going every day. Leaving the woodies alone and chasing big ducks which I have not yet figured out. I decoyed 6 gadwall today but they landed and left before legal light. Ended up with small, 6-12 bird flocks all around me but they did not want to be close to the shore line. I'm still not convinced they'll accept my kayak out in the open water, but I may have to give it a shot.

I've learned something every day though. Been getting to listen to and watch a lot of birds. Had a flock of about 20 Canada geese fly over this morning, which surprised me.

I went with my son this morning. I shot six times at two ducks and he shot twice at one. He stoned his with a head shot and I didn’t draw a feather. This may be better off in the no shame thread titled “my 12 year old shoots better than me!”

I really like those fancy duck boats with mud motors but this is what I’ve been using for the past five years or so. Landau 1470 with a Yamaha 25hp four stroke.

I dig it. I'd have a yammahammer if I wasn't cheap and if the area i hunted wasn't infamous for leaving folks stranded when the tide went out

Don’t have much issue with tides in the Midwest! I got a smoking deal on that Yamaha because the tiller bracket was broken. Two four inch pieces of sheet metal and some bolts and it’s been good to go. Lol, if I wasn’t cheap I’d buy a replacement part.
