In August I had an accident with a shikar stick that dumped me out of the tree about 3-4' off the ground that jarred my right knee. It was then that I sold the rotating steps and got the permanent ones. In October, I was on a hunt and riding my quietkat. I hit a stupid hidden hole and went flying off the bike. Landed and hit my right leg and my knee locked up. Thought I broke my leg and my Excalibur take down crossbow. Thankful I didn't break either, but was really glad the bow was unscathed. Wish my knee would have fared as well. In November I had spats of pain in my knee and would shake it off and would be better in a day or so. Yesterday i was at my lease (172 miles north of me) and thought I would be ok walking around. Walked up a hill and was actually crying out in pain. Climbed a ladder stand that was out there and could not climb with my right leg. Getting out of the stand and going back down the steep hill I had to sit on my butt and slide down with my pack and weapon...I had to grab a stick and unload my weapon to use a steady brace to get down. I got back to camp and could not bend my knee...called my wife who asked me what happens if I get a deer and cannot even walk back or if I fall and really hurt myself.

So I came home...left my home at 3:40 am and had to come back at 1:00 pm due to a debilitating injury. Luckily I was able to drive home and be with my family instead of lying on the ground hoping someone could find me. Been home and been on ice for 1 1/2 days and I have more motion, but I have other hunts planned. A knee brace only intensifies the pain. Don't know what to do as I mainly one stick up the tree...I may have to set up an SRT on a small private land 30 minutes from me.

Going to call the Orthopedic surgeon tomorrow.

Man that sucks. Get it looked at and follow the doctors instructions to the letter.

I broke my leg and had a rod installed in my shin 12 years ago and thought I was ready to rock before my doctor released me for work. I’ll be having the rod removed and a knee replacement at least 10 years ahead of schedule because I’m an idiot. Bone collapsed around the break and the rod is pushing up on the important stuff in my knee now, makes a pretty nasty noise when I’m packing a load or going up stairs.

Mother in law just had outpatient knee replacement and was back in action in less than 3 months. Modern medicine is pretty amazing stuff.

God bless

Sounds like you’re avoiding the solution. Get it fixed. I was the same way. I bit the bullet a few years back and had to cancel a western hunt and most of my season. The real kicker was that I didn’t get paid for 7 months.

Fast forward, I was an idiot for not getting it fixed right away. I ended up damaging more of my knee which required more surgery and a more difficult recovery.

I realized that I was not, “being a man” and toughing It out, I was being a baby and making things worse.

Take it easy and seek medical professional help. There is not 1 single buck out there worth diminishing your quality of life.

Take care of number 1, so you don't end up in a world of number 2.
Listen to your doctor. Suffer through 1 bad seasson instead of many to come. Hope it's not that bad. But take care of your self. Your family needs you more than you need a deer.

At the minimum I wouldn't be climbing a tree. Hunt from the ground if you need to hunt. But I'd get an expert's opinion before further damage happens. It's probably not what you want to hear but if surgery is required you can start recovery sooner.

I'm sorry to hear of your bad luck. I was taken out by a pinched nerve in my neck that ended my season about a month ago.The kicker is the exact same thing happened to me last year so it could be worse. Get better now and hopefully next year will be a banner year for you.

You've had some bad luck come your way for sure, sorry to hear about the knee injury.

I would bail out and not hunt the remaining season and get that knee repaired and ready for next year. You could cause more damage, possible permanent injury if you continue pushing it which could affect you the rest of your life, or worse keep you from being able to hunt!

Wish you the best my friend

you should see a doctor man my dad is having a surgery in the morning to fix a torn meniscus in his knee. Pretty bad pain for him and has been for awhile. At first wasn’t bad then progressively got worse to some points he had to have a little help to get out of bed. Hope things work out though and you get better soon. It’s May also surprise you some knee surgeries depending on what it is can be very minimal with just a few week recovery sometimes.

Sometimes the only luck I have is bad. I choose to look at this as preparation for the future. I will scale back my hunting...I have a small private land where I can walk 100 yards down to a field and set up in the tree line in a chair tucked into some brush. With Illinois blackpowder season next weekend i would like to get one more. If I do get one...I have two young sons (16, and 13) that my wife will drive to the location and drag it up for me.

I will get my doctor to look at it and if it requires surgery then I'll get it done as soon as possible. This way i'll be ready to lease some new land (closer to me...like only an hour and not three) as well as sell my quietkat for a 4 wheeler atv.

Hmmm, private land in Illinois you say...

If it would make it easier for you I could sneak away from here for a week to help you out, ya know get you in your chair nice and comfy like and when you shoot one I'll drag both of our deer out. That way you don't have to inconvenience your family memebers.

it builds character...the inconveniences...and I’m all about building character. Plus they need to get outside and away from their video games.
I appreciate your offer.

I got dumped off my Rambo ebike in the middle of my rutcation and disloacted my shoulder a few hundred yards from the truck. Finally out of a sling today. This stuff is dangerous.

Luckily I was able to shoot a small buck off the ground with my dad's crossgun to keep my sanity. Sucks to work your ass off all year, save all your vacation, and then get put out of commission.

Sorry to hear about your leg. I picked up on you wanting to climb SRT with your bad leg. I have been saying SRT is easier climbing but most people that have not tried it say sticks are easier. You should be fine with SRT while climbing with your left leg.

You should be fine with SRT while climbing with your left leg. What about walking in and if you shoot a deer and need to drag it?

I've done DDRT this year and SRT is what I started doing. However I left that to go with one sticking, but I have noticed that when I one stick and move up the tree using my right leg to put into the aider that it's not as strong and slightly painful using my right let. I then started using my left leg to get me up the tree while one sticking. I know that with SRT will be better as long as I use my left leg. My wife has asked me to hunt on the ground.

Hope you heal quickly Paul, sounds like you are having a terrible year, have you been able to kill anything yet?

Thanks...I was able to get one small button buck on the ground and actually stalked it from my deer stand location from 350 yards away. I shot it at bow range with my son's 20 gauge shotgun (42 yards). The private land I hunt is on a huge hill going down into what I call a bowl. At the bottom of the bowl is 28 acres of a cut cornfield...with strips of timber surrounding it...I can walk to the closest edge of of the cornfield (150 yards from the top) and tuck myself up against a large maple tree that I was planning on setting up for an SRT location. I will have to cut some small brush and place my folding chair into the location and surround my direct front with the brush I cut. There are several does that frequent this area. Now if I get a deer, the landowner is a hardy lady...she's a retired electrician from the refinery. When I say she is hardy...this lady while older is very capable of doing anything that needs to be done. She has in her machine shop an old ford 4 wheel drive truck and an atv I can use. If she's not there, then i can always call my wife to bring out my two boys (16 and 13) and have them come out and drag the deer for me. That's my plan and I'll call the doctor in an hour.

Unfortunately my lease is 3 hours away from me and that's where I was when this injury really raised it's ugly head. I had driven there at 3:30 am and got there at 6:30 tried to hunt and had to leave at 1 pm. My wife now doesn't want me to go there as what would happen if I fell while walking and really injured my knee to the point I could not make it back to the truck. Being 3 hours away that would be a very long wait as my partner on the lease lives north of Springfield, IL and my lease is 10 miles from the Iowa border (Burlington, Iowa) and I'm just north of St. Louis in Alton. So now I'm regulated with hunting 30 minutes around me and will not be able to climb unless I set up an SRT location or bring my pole with me. Thinking about my pole, I can use it as a giant walking stick too.

I was gonna say, hunt from the ground. You beat me too it. Seems like your taking this in stride.

Even if you don't get to fill the tags, still getting out can help you through getting better. Knowing when enough is enough is key. And obviously, you have family to support you, and drag your deer out.

Your season isn't over unless you want it to be over. It just got a little interesting... and painful.

As for saddle hunting, I'm certain there's climbing methods that with proper practice you can master and use to hunt elevated with ease.

I hope you speedy recovery, and great rest of your season.

About the quietkat, how much?

Kidding, but I'm sure you won't have trouble selling that! I know bicycle wrecks all too well, and that made me cringe a little.:grimacing::tearsofjoy:

The quietkat as a package cost me 5700.00 (Bike, cargo trailer, panier and panier bags, fenders, extra battery, and bike rack) and would like 4000.00 and or trade for an ATV with trailer or just the ATV. Perfer a honda but at this point I'm not picky.
