Hey guys I’m attempting to resurrect an older Kenmore Model 50 sewing machine and tinker on some projects. The sewing machine was my grandmothers and seems to be in really good shape. I’d like to be able to use it if possible. Anyway my question is what kind of thread and needle do I need for sewing seatbelt type straps. I’ve got a lot of webbing and thought I’d practice on it. I searched through some old threads (no pun intended lol) and didn’t quiet find an answer. Thanks

To play with it asap, go to walmart buy some needles labeled as heavy duty or denim and some thread labeled as upholstery. They do not have a huge selection so it isnt too overwhelming.

You need a heavy needle. If you are just getting started go pickup a denim needle at the local wally world or craft store. I started with nylon upholstery thread for practice, but you will probably want to go to something more standard like Gutermann Tera thread if you are going to build a saddle. I would start with something like a dump pouch, back band, etc to learn!

Edit: what @LeanMachine said!! haha

Here’s my three webbing options. I’ve got a roll of each type probably 100’ each. I don’t know any stats on them. The widest is hollow.

I use a 110/16 or 110/18 denim needle. To sew through multiple layers of that. There is a thread on here called DIY Kestrel Clone that I referenced to make my saddle.

Also check out @always89y 's YouTube video of his saddle build.

Back in my day we didn't have no fancy videos just these old dusty threads

Here are some threads for making a dump pouch:

And back band ideas:

Thank for all the links. I just picked up some goodies at JoAnn’s. Wish me luck haha.

If that's Guttermann's Upholstery thread that is V69 and the thread I use for non life support straps. The size 18 needles you bought will work great with that. If you made enough stitches the V69 would even be OK for life support systems.
Wow. I go out and sit up a tree for 3 hours and I miss everything. :D Didn't see any deer.

It is Guttermans upholstery thread. They didn’t have any of the tera whatever that is lol. I’m hoping to work on replacing the straps on my spurs. I’ll get whatever thread I need when I get to the important stuff but sounds like this will get me started with the basics then I’ll tackle the spurs later. So far I haven’t been able to get the needle to pick up the thread from the bottom bobbin so I’m still working on that. I’m checking out the timing and all that stuff.

Guttermans upholstery thread is Tera whatever. An employee from Guttermans confirmed it in a post.

Good deal thanks. I had to break from the machine the other day. I still haven’t gotten it going yet. I’m going to tinker with it today.
