Shot back on a buck. Dont know if I pulled or all my extra arctic clothing thew off my shot, but it is what it is. He mule kicked a little, couple jumps then stood and looked back for a few seconds. After maybe 10-15 seconds he took off a little more than a walk. No death run by any means.

Got down checked the arrow. Hair all over the place, no blood at impact, arrow had what looks like fat on broadhead couple thin streak of blood down shaft and brown stuff (poop?) And hair on vanes. Arrow was dug into the ground couple inches with vanes away from me.

Walked a little down his tracks (luckily we have snow) and about 20 yds i think where he stood and looked back there is a sneeze of blood off to one side. Kept going down the tracks and theres a drop/spot of blood every 3-4 steps. Every obstacle he jumps seems there is more blood.

Any idea guys?

Followed him about 100 yds (wasnt worried about bumping I watched him walk 200 or so). Shot him around 1130. Backed out around 1215.

Area is crp with road along bottom. river from 7 to 230 with 50-200 yds of woods between river and crp and private from 230 back down to road. He went away from private so assume hes either in woods or layed up in crp somewhere

How far back are we talking? A few inches? A foot? Two? Was it a full broadside shot or was he quartering away/to? With the information presented it sounds like a full gut shot. If there is no chance of liver/lung I'd give him time, a lot of time, like more than 12 hours of time (probably should start looking tomorrow morning). Start with the blood trail/tracks, if it dries up or no body found start looking near water. If the tracking is really abysmal I would suggest getting a blood tracking dog (assuming everything is kosher with local laws).

Full broadside. Probably foot back front where I should've hit him. Wouldn't think any liver/lungs.

I agree, wait till lunch tomorrow and try to track or get a tracking dog between now and then to take in with you tomorrow.
Sorry man it will be a long night.

If you can see a deer walk 200 yards and not die, don’t go down his trail right after you shoot looking for him.

Based on this poll, over 90% of deer that users here have double lunged have gone less than 200 yards. Every other shot is going to likely require some time for the deer to expire.

With a shot like this, if you shoot, and don’t see em go down with that kind of visibility, either sneak out, or sit tight.

Odd the broadhead is spotless like that - I assume it went in snow?

Looks like stomach matter. He’s likely dead overnight. I’d wait till morning.

Good luck and keep us posted - the Rec to find a dog is a sound one. You’ll find that deer in a jiff.

Came back to "guard" the access to the piece I shot him on and ran into a traditional saddle hunter. Super nice guy. Said he saw my pee spot and was planning to turn around anyways but got to talking. Cool guy.

There is no good reason to go in after him now, I’d wait & even if you can’t physically get the tracker right away they could give you some insight......

Sounds like a gut shot. If you don't push him and give him plenty of time you probably will find him within 100 yds of your last sighting. Good luck

Not sure how this will show up. Tracker asked where I shot worst case i said 11D or 12C worst case, 10D best case. He seems confident we should be able to find him. Well see.

Good thing is there is plenty of public around so should have free range.

If there is any water near by and you cant find him off the blood trail I would do a grid search then hit the water. Gut shot deer like going to water to take the burn out of the wound.

No sir. Tracked him 500 yds without bedding once. Scarce blood the whole way. Tracks went right into a river towards an island. I walked the water to the island and not a single track on it. Walked up and down the edge to see if he looped back but didnt find anymore blood and dog didnt pick anything up. Tracker thinks I hit him farther back almost into the thigh. Said hes never seen a gut shot go that far without bedding.

....sucks

That stinks or it will in a day or two. He’s dead or dying somewhere. 500 yards is a long way not to have a bed unless you bumped him retrieving your arrow. Either way it’s time to hunt another one.
