New option for saddle

well,

This one arrived. Strapped to a post in the shop and hung for 15 minutes.

Initial thoughts:

-significantly more comfortable on its own than sit drag on its own.
- about double or more the weight of the sit drag on its own, same weight as sit drag when I carry two layers of foam padding (typical for me).
- slightly less packable than sit drag with no padding, slightly more packable than sit drag with a layer of foam.
- the total length is 36", not the webbing part. This is dialed in exactly for me, but bigger guys may want to go with the 4'
-comfort comparable to sit drag with three layers of foam. I don't carry this hunting but did try it out and it completely removed pressure points. However, I give it a slight nod over the SD because the surface area is larger and the weight is more spread out.

Honestly, this has a ton of potential. The weight is distributed evenly across the whole piece of webbing. I did see a slight amount of cupping right under the loops, but it was minimal. I think I know an easy, lightweight fix to this. just bolt some flat bar across the two edges of the sling where the loops are sewn in. they'll keep the load distributed completely across the whole sling. would probably add 6-8oz if steel, 4-5 if aluminum.

I'm excited for the first one I posted to come in tomorrow.

Overall theme - I could hunt out of this as is with a little camo fabric sleeve sewn on. I think camo fleece doubled up and then sewn around would make this the bees knees.

Stay tuned if I mod it any further i'll post. But for 15.00 it's worth it. It proves out my theory that all webbing is nice because it distributes the load across whole sling. Same concept as using super heavy duty fabrics of the commercial saddles.

What are you using for a bridge there?

Well,

Having my morning coffee I read the label on the basket sling I have - I ordered a 3'x12", and what I got is a 4'x 12". So disregard my comment about bigger guys needing the 4'. I mostly meant about the surface area of the wide webbing under your butt. The overall length of this one is good, if not just slightly long. I'd get a flexible measuring tape and measure how much it takes to come around your hips.

Dimensions are: 12" wide x 24" webbing surface, loop on each side 12" long when pulled tight - 4' total length.

Man, if we had a source for 10,12" webbing by the yard....

Here's a 12" like the one coming in tomorrow (10").

Given the whacky pricing, someone might want to scoop this one up. If you can wait till tomorrow, i'll post a review...

$475....but free shipping!

I'm not going to lie, the pricing on amazon is cracking me up. Makes no sense.

UPDATE: I informed the chat helper on amazon that they shipped me the wrong sling, and that I wanted to get the right sling. Because it's no longer prime eligible and in stock, they couldn't help, but would offer a full refund, and I keep the sling. Haha it went from 13.00 to free.

Muddy waters here, but the idea is legit. I just bought the 3'x16" to get an idea if being any wider helps, but I think 12" is going to be the max.

the original type 8 2 ply basket sling I ordered came in and I got to unpack at lunch.

Way too heavy. Loops are way too stiff. Not a viable saddle option.

Someone could try the single ply, but I fear it would be the same thing.

I am going to move forward with the type 9 that I got yesterday. It is proving to be a nice little option sitting here at my desk next to me...taking my attention from work...

Looking forward to seeing the camo sleeve your gonna make for it

Rather than a separate camo sleeve, a google search leads me to believe this yellow nylon material could be acid dyed which, while not camo, could result in a more subdued color.

Looks like I should have bought one of these rather than a SitDrag...

So how heavy is it?

I need to get a digital scale for a handful of things around the house anyway. I'll weight it. I believe it's about 1.5lbs if I had to guess. Maybe 2. it rolls up to about the size of the sitdrag with a piece of foam in it.

SDweight.jpg 10 ounces more than my sit drag with amsteel bridge and two foam pads (how I hunt it). So call it 12 ounces heavier assuming I use same bridge on the new sling. You can see the difference in weight that solid webbing makes - the same difference you see in the commercial saddles with heavy material or padding in them. It's a trade off. But I can tell you the 4" in added height, and the way the weight is distributed evenly across the whole sling - I have a feeling I'm going to lean towards it over my SD.

Also, I went ahead and bought a couple longer slings in 10" and 12" widths. If you guys want, I can sell pieces long enough to make your own sling. You just sew on your own webbing loops on the sides. Avoid the weirdo pricing of amazon. If you're interested, shoot me a message. I think it would be fun to get 10-12 people to make their own with this and see where we can go with it.

Beautiful camo on that thing. Mossy Oak Bottomlands.

My favorite camo. Don't get the point of anything between bottomlands and the new digital ones (they're just cool) - all the rest is nonsense.

I've bought a pile of it over the last couple years in case they stop making it. I wish it would make a bigger comeback.

Got in an hour sit. Comparable comfort to my SD with two layers of foam. a much higher tie in point that I typically use allowed me to sit in it like a swing when I wasn't leaning. I could turn sideways and sleep for sure.

My camo job isn't perfect. But I've got a total of 5.00 in this sling right now. Bridge and a Biner and I'm looking at 20.00.
