New paraplegic guy here

Welcome. I would look at the new guidos web. You would have plenty of support under your legs and butt and also a good backrest. I applaud your desire to want to saddle hunt and have often wondered if this is a viable way for people who were paralyzed. I will be very interested in hearing how things work out for you. I'm not the most seasoned of people on this site I can assure you so there may be some other guys that could make some better suggestions and I. I'll try and share the link to the new guidos web thread. Saddle Hunters are great people you may be able to even get some of the guys to help customize something for you.

It is viable if you have the mindset to make it work but knowing all things will not be the same between myself and others and can accept it. I have been crippled for almost 19 years so I passed that bridge years ago.

What is “new guidos website”, as the one I went to last night said he was closing down a few months ago?

Thanks.

View attachment 4936 Would something like this be good for you. I know it’s pricy but let me know if it is something you could use

Why yes it would, that is the type I am looking for. I would just need my brother in law to fix some portions of the leg rest to make them bigger but the back support looks fantastic.

As for price, when you want to do something as a paraplegic, normally the prices do go way up.

New to the forum and felt this was my best place to start since I have a question.

I am wondering if there are any other paralyzed folks here who saddle hunt? I have not started saddle hunting at this time but plan on doing so next hunting season as I will be vary limited on my hunts this year. If there are any other folks like me here or other saddle hunters who have taken someone like me out, what is the type of harness that was used?

From my research so far it seems to me I will need a harness that would be more used for arbor workers, I see they cost a lot more but it is what it is. From the harness’ I have seen for saddle hunting there would just not be enough leg and back support for me, as I really need to as much pressure off my cheeks as possible.

And before someone asks I plan on accessing the tree via an SRT method and may end up with some type of seat to take up with me so I can take some breaks from hanging if necessary. Do I believe I will be able to pull off all the shots as an able bodied person, no, but it will be better than hunting from my action track chair. Thanks.
Welcome to the site! My first thought was the guido's web also. The new version is expected to be out this year.

What is your current climbing and hunting method right now?

I don’t know how to pm on this site but if you send me one I’m sure I can figure it out. I have one of these that I bought new and never use. If you are interested I will give you a super deal like more than 50% off

As of right now I think the only place you can find any information about it is on the thread that I posted above. You are definitely in the right place my friend. @Autumnrider I believe has direct contact with the man who has purchased the guido Webb company and is working on a new prototype. You could probably send him a PM and maybe he could give you a little more insight as to what to expect.

I think it’s awesome that you want to give it a try. The web was also my first thought. You should be able to use your arms to move around the tree some. I’m not sure how far you could move around the tree and the whale tail still keep you there. @Autumnrider could probably answer that. I’m not a srt expert but it seems like everyone on here uses a foot loop to climb srt. I know I couldn’t do it with just my hand and arm strength. Maybe you could share what your strengths and limitations are. Could you use a loop attachment at your thigh to ascend or just hands. Also how much assistance will you have in the field if any? I would look into the double rope technique and having my trees presets so I could just pull my rope up trough my anchor point and start climbing.

I can’t read your pm it keeps giving me an error. Just email me at genedara@gmail.com

You could do a modified version of SRT without the foot loop, you could even add a few pulleys for more of a mech advantage. You wouldn't go up as quick but it would be a lot easier.

I pull with both arms and step up with the foot loop, but you can do it with just your arms.

I'm thinking a double pulley on the ascender and one by the grigri(that's what I use to tend the line and lock off.

I don't have enough pulleys but I'll play around with it a little and maybe throw up some pictures.

EXO, great to see you over here. Seems like a lot of us “Beast” guys have been switching over. I have nothing in the way of suggestions, but there is a great amount of ingenuity over here as well.

Alright finally got some time to mess around with SRT and the double pulley setup I mentioned earlier.

2 photos first one is my standard hunting SRT setup, second is the double pulley method.

Conclusion, I think without actual pulleys I can't tell if it's better because of the added friction. I couldn't find the one I have, but you really need one double and a single. I can pull myself up with just the standard SRT but I think that would be tough all the way up.

Welcome!

I don't think adding pulleys to a rads setup will make things easier. Kudos to donnieballgame for testing it! When I saw paraplegic, no leg use I immediately thought RADS. Definitely not as fast as using a foot loop, but what WOULD be?

Exo, look up RADS srt climbing. If you can pull maybe 60% of your weight on a rope 1-2 feet at a time, you can get up a tree.

Keep posting about your progress, you have an awesome community here that will help you reach this goal.

Welcome to the sight, and its awesome to see someone in your situation willing to give this a try. My wife and a good friend of mine work with adaptive climbing and outdoor activities, right now she is out of town but when she gets back I'll ask them if they would have a better way for you to climb rope to get up in a tree.

Well, I proved that without the pulley's it isn't easier, lol. I was just hoping it would be easier on the arms with the pulley's and therefore easier to get to height without the use of your legs.

Check out MeatEater Podcast Ep. 120, Adaptive Hunting and Fishing, I haven't finished it yet, so I can't comment on any insight.

Donnie,

Thank you for the testing and my apologizes for not responding earlier.

I was actually just got home this week after spending three months in the hospital and than rehab after major surgery (never leaving my bed once). I totaled it up and it has been 19 months that I have been dealing with this issue so I am hopeful it is behind me after that amount of time and over 40 hospital admissions. Really it feels like I have been away from my family for the whole 19 months. and to be honest there were times I never thought I would make it home outside of coming home in a box.

After the surgery and speaking with the docs I do not believe my body will be ready this year for the saddle and may have to miss the season all together although i do want a few hunts were I do not have to go deep into the woods.

Lets see how it does.

Man I'll be sending Mega prayers your way. I don't want to get in your business but I sure be praying everything works out, and hoping you get to make a couple of hunts this year. When I hear stuff like this it just makes me shake my head and think to myself what the hell do I ever have to complain about.
