New SRT climber, help please!

This is a whole different issue, but can anyone point me to posts on choosing a safe tree to climb? What I mean is are there some tree species, sizes, that are not safe because they could fall when we are monkeying around in them? I preset a few cottonwoods that are about 12-18 diameter today, and after going 20 ft up one I started to question how sturdy they are. The small branches pop off quite easily and there are quite a few blown down trees in the area. The maple I climbed the other day was the same size but felt much more solid. I generally wouldn't choose to climb cottonwoods in general - but that happens to be the only tree species where the deer are.

Around here I worry about pine trees but sitting in them isn't going to break them. Being in one during a windstorm wouldn't be fun. watch out for dead limbs and sickly trees

Oh, I'd avoid bradford pears...not that I've seen one in the woods I hunt it if you're hunting an urban control hunt around here or near houses they're everywhere. Most people wish they never planter the things, usually after they land on the house. They drop limbs in storms like crazy.
