NJ hunting?

I haven't been able to find info pertaining to transporting. What I mean is I'm planning to quarter, bone and then pack the deer out of the woods so I can bring it back home to NY (legally due to CWD fears). I know I have to fill out a deer harvest card and tag the deer along with reporting it either online or phone call to get a confirmation number. Is there anything else I need to be concerned with if I bump into a GW while walking to my vehicle?

You will have to keep the head.

Transporting the gun or the deer? Case the gun and your good. Tag the deer immediately and You should be good. Not sure about the CWD concerns. Crossing states could be an issue. That makes it Federal.

I think I'll give a GW a call and get it from the horses mouth on what they expect.
Seems silly to bring out a doe head but then again I'm a logical thinker and sometimes laws and rules are not logical. I wonder if anyone's ever been caught launching a deer head out of a car window at the state border?

“NOTE: A hunter may be required to produce the head of the deer—or produce records relating to the location of the head such as the butcher or taxider- mist who has possession of the deer’s head—upon request by a Conservation Police Officer within 48 hours after a deer harvest is reported.”

Can you show me where it says your weapon needs to be in a case for transport? Never heard of that. I've had several game wardens stop and chat with me while my bow was sitting on the passenger seat uncased, on my tailgate, etc. and they've never taken issue with it.
I brought that up because years ago I had my gun leaning against my tire. Warden busted my chops about it and told me to read up on the laws. Since then, my weapon bow, crossbow, or gun always goes straight into its case or I lean it against a tree.

So if I leave the head with the carcass I can just give him the coordinates to the kill location where I was hunting...lol

Yeah I read that too but I took that to mean for an antlered deer, like why would one keep a doe head? See, I'm thinking logically again.

To make sure it’s a doe you shot and not a buck checked in as a doe. IE shooting a 4 ptr in zone 3 which is a trophy Zone and checking it in as a doe or checking a buck in as doe so you don’t use up your one and only buck tag for the season.

Any Jersey guys on here in the Phillipsburg area? I used to hunt jersey in middlesex county years ago but never with bow. I’m a PA guy now but with another baby on the way, next season will provide much less hunting time than normal. The Sunday hunting in jersey might help out getting me a few more sits.

I know in the past as a disabled vet, my licenses were free, but now so I pay full out of state price or is there a reduced price? Also, I’m looking for public lands other than Merrill Creek in case I don’t draw there, any ideas in that area that are open?

I don’t want to highjack the tread but figured this would get attention from my target audience. Feel free to PM me if you think you could help me out in any way.

Oh ok. So nothing about bows, which is what the OP mentioned hunting with.

I’d still be careful. A guy in my club in NJ got pinched by a game warden due to uncased bow in his vehicle. This was probably 10 years ago, it still.

In addition, I believe it is also a deterrent for anyone who would tag a non-existent doe in a earn a buck zone during the earn a buck time. Especially if they just shot a buck without the prerequisite of shooting a doe first.

I called and spoke with an Environmental Officer today and she cleared up some of the things brought up in this post.

- A compound bow DOES NOT need to be transported in a case, it is fine laying on the back seat.
- It is OK to quarter and pack out a deer provided you take all of the edible parts (front and rear quarters, backstrap/tenderloins) while on state lands. If on county lands or other non state land you will need to check with them on if/how they want you to remove the carcass.
- The head MUST BE KEPT (or location known, taxidermist) regardless of sex for 48 hours after being reported. An ECO will drive to you/taxidermist etc. to inspect.

NJ also requires a child support certification form to be filled out prior to a license purchase along with a SS# or a drivers license#...
How long till fingerprinting and a DNA swab??

Of all the crazy things we have to do I find that one to be one of the easiest. Don't be a deadbeat dad and then you check a couple boxes and sign when you purchase. I think you can even just sign off on it online cause I haven't purchased licenses in person for a few years now.

I don't think there is any deer left in north Jersey. They are all in local neighborhoods where you can't hunt.

That is partially true ^^^^. We also lost a lot of deer in the late summer to EHD I believe it’s called. It’s from a parasite they get when they are bit by a bug called the Midge. Lots of deer were found dead lying in bodies of water trying to cool down because they overheat.

If it helps at all we were hit pretty hard with EHD here in northern Michigan a few years ago but the herd has rebounded nicely.

In NJ we have a ton of stupid laws. Don’t set your weapon on the tailgate or lean it against a tire. If it’s touching the vehicle, it has to be in a case. In most zones you can kill as many antlerless deer as you can. Most people here put out a giant pile of corn and sit 10 feet away from it. When the doe and 2 fawns walk up to eat it, they shoot the mother first because the fawns will stay with her. Then they shoot the 2 fawns. They do this year in and year out (unless 20 of them are doing deer drives). Then they wonder why NJ deer hunting was so much better in the 80’s. Here I go, let me stop there.
Omg. This is so true lol. Where you from my friend? Cape may here.

I live in Andover (Sussex county). Where do I hunt??? Let’s just say I hike numerous miles up hill both ways, where lazy people who don’t know how to hunt, aren’t willing to drag their corn bags LOL HAHAHA.
