Not a Gun Guy…

Well I have a rain day today so it was time to finish this thing and order a stock… I went with my original plan, a carbon fiber AG Composites Privateer, it should be around 25 oz, after some thinking on the chassis it’s just more than I need, I’ve always favored a more traditional style stock for swinging on moving targets probably because that’s all I’ve ever used for so long, and refuse to change, my plan for this rifle was to build something fairly light, compact, and zero recoil, easy to shoot, a 300 yard and under whitetail, saddle rifle, that I could still hike mountains with in case plans change, while in the back country, we will see. I have plenty of options already for that kind if stuff, that’s my justification for this one though, and if that doesn’t pan out I can relinquish it to winter coyote duty, my current coyote rifle has seen 30++ years of hard abuse and it was time for something lighter. I’m dipping my toes in the less recoil, easier to shoot a lighter round game for whitetails with this 6 Creed, if I wound and don’t recover one single deer with it, then it’s destined for coyotes. I have a set of Hawkins long range hybrid rings here for it as well, I think I’m putting a Leupold VX5HD 2-10 firedot on this one, we will see on that though, I have 3 months to decide. I went with this color.

Sounds awesome. I also wouldn’t change stock ergonomics were I you.

The chassis I held, that MDT HNT 26 is over on Rokslide right now for sale with a Christensen Arms 6.5 Creed in it, nice light little package for someone, if it was left handed I probably would have caved and own it.

My action is in the mail and I’m trying to decide on a scope. Leaning towards an NX8 2.5-20. I only have 14 more weeks to decide so I’m sure I’ll find something else than go back to the NF 28 times.

I’m still shooting the ABolt. I was able to stretch it out to 600 this past week. It took three shots to walk it in but not bad for the set up. I’m still looking for a stock that’s not a million bucks for it.

I had that scope it was awesome, I’m still working but I’ll share some thoughts later..

I have a good friend who had a small shop at one time, he basically still does… I’ve been fortunate that he will allow me to test any scope or binos I want, and on my rifle, I can even take this stuff home and use it for however long I want and mess around with it, probably an entire season if I asked, Nightforce, Swarovski, Leupold… you name it I’ve tried it, from a NF Beast.. Atacr, NXS, NX8, SHV… I’ve handled or tried them all with no pressure to buy and for free, last year when I wanted a new scope I brought my rifle with me and left with a NX8 2.5-20.

If you search the web looking for reviews on the NX8 you will hear stories about bad eye relief, tight eye box, in my opinion it is all BS, like I said I can try them all for free or for as long as I want, with no pressure to buy, and I have most of them, and ended up spending my money on what you see, the 2.5-20, full disclosure I did end up selling it back, with zero $$ lost after an entire year, but would buy one again in a heartbeat if I was building a long range rig like you, I don’t hunt long range, have no place to do so for the most part, and won’t pretend to be someone who does online, all of my bread and butter rifles that kill most of what I shoot are finished, and no need to mess around with them as they perform as needed with more basic scopes, but my play rifles sometimes get long range toys like the cool kids have!! I hunted one day last year with one of my elk rifles that never gets used because I haven’t been elk hunting in 15 years or more, just to use it, and whacked this buck at 200 yards from my saddle! I could go on for hours about what I did or didn’t like with most of the top scopes on the market today, and binos, that I’ve tried, but my favorite has been the NX8 2.5-20 so far, the 4-32 is nice as well, for my purpose the 2.5-20 checked all the boxes, 2.5x in case you jump something close in thick timber, 20x for the long stuff, it does it all, covered windage adjustment, I would never dial for wind where I hunt, I don’t know how, the biggest reason for me getting rid of it was I just don’t need something that robust, completely overkill for how I operate and the weight penalty was too much for me, I won’t lie though if I end up booking a trip somewhere and know shots will be more than my usual at home whitetail hunts another NX8 will be here fast, real fast. A lot of strong opinions going around about Leupold on other forums and their failure to hold zero, not track, etc.. here is my 2 cents, I have never in 30 years, ever had a Leupold lose zero, never, people can go pound sand about Leupold scopes losing zero riding in a truck, I don’t believe it, has someone had it happen, one person, a couple, maybe.. is the normal thing for a Leupold to lose zero from a car ride, no it isn’t and out of the dozens I’ve owned, used, and tried, that has not been my experience at all and my rifles don’t always get babied, I won’t speak to tracking issues and the Leupold CDS reliability as I never dial when I hunt, but I plan on putting one through the paces here this summer off my bench, a VX5HD 3-15, it’s sitting here waiting to go on a rifle I have to build a load for, if it sucks I will say it it does. Still, usually when there‘s smoke, there’s fire, and I wouldn’t personally buy a Leupold with a CDS dial and expect to crank on it like a Nightforce and expect it to perform the same, track, etc….for set and forget scopes Leupold is still a great option, it’s what I use. For a dialer I wouldn’t even think twice and just get a Nightforce, you know it will perform when needed, so long as you can stand the weight of them.

Thanks for that info. I like Leupold but don’t love the reticles. My ABolt has a VX3 on it and it has tracked perfectly. Not bad for a 20 year old scope.
I think I’m sitting strong on the NX8. I really thought about the Maven but it’s not proven yet. The reliability is what pushes the NF over the edge.

When you decide on which exact one you want send me the model # and if I see a deal I‘ll send you a PM, I have a couple online honey holes I check for deals on new Nightforce!

I love the HNT chassis. This is my 284 Winchester. Nosler can, Defiant AnTi action. Timney Hit trigger. Patriot Valley Arms CF barrel. Spartan Precision CF bipod. It's almost as light as my WEZBEV bow that's going to get me banned.

Update in the 7prc build:
I was totally a cheap ass when I bought my chassis and didn’t go with the magnesium. About a week ago I could get it out of my head. Called XLR today and got that switched. Didn’t loose my place in line and even added the thumb rest. Barrel, action, trigger and muzzle break are headed to the smith this week or next. Getting close-ish.

Do it once and do it right.. I like it.. I'm 2 weeks into my 12 week wait for my stock, I have zero patience for this type of thing.. lol.

The last time I bought pic rings, which is what your using I would guess, Optics Planet blows out all of there open box, damaged packaging stuff…. super cheap on Gunbroker, I scored some NF rings, they were brand new, last time I looked they had a pile of Seekins rings on there ridiculously cheap, it’s been a couple months since I last checked. I can’t remember what height I ran on my NX8 like your getting, when I used a rail, I had it on a Hells Canyon Armory rifle I used to have, with a 25 moa rail for a bit..
