Not hunting anymore

If it wasn't for archery I wouldn't have even started hunting. Saddle hunting has had a similar affect in keeping me hunting. Both have such hobbie characteristics that I feel allow you to constantly change, challenge yourself, and piddle. Basically, I like shooting bows and climbing trees and if I wasn't doing one of those I probably wouldn't be hunting deer. I would say I am mad at deer right now. I am constantly scouting and learning what it takes to take down that mature buck, but when I am in the woods I'm still enjoying myself.

I have heard folks say that switching to traditional archery or saddle hunting methods have rekindled the joy of hunting for them. Neither are necessities to hunting but rather means to hunting. Sometimes all folks need is to be shown a new, different or challenging way to do things. There are those that struggle to change and those that struggle to stay the same. I feel like I fall more into the latter.

All in all, once I get fed up with deer, ducks will be the next to have it, I guarantee you that.

I’m a duck hunter, but haven’t been in a few years. Only got into deer hunting because my duck hunting buddies got permission to go less and less after they got married. So I had to find something I could do solo. I started bow hunting. I still have all my duck hunting gear but wouldn’t know where to start in Al. And I’m not talking about jumping a few wood ducks.

I hit the doe I shot last weekend high on the leg, under the ribs and out the other side of the ribs without snagging vitals. She was laying there as you described with her head up just blinking. I put another arrow in her but it didn't end her suffering quick enough so I had to pin her down and cut her throat. It truly was sad. I hate to injure an animal like that. I plan to honor the deer that I caused to suffer by eating the heart for the first time.

That’s tough. Meat is murder, at least we know that as well as anybody, hopefully that guides our decisions.

Welp boys I temporarily have to quit small game hunting/scouting for atleast a week. Had a freak accident today with a spinning saw blade and my hand, had surgery to repair nerve and tendon damage. Should know in the follow appointment in a couple of days if my hand will be back to 100%>20200204_085746.jpg

After my experience I thought about carrying a knife, like a bayonet, which I could attach to my bow which I could deploy at a safe distance.

My 1st deer I ever killed ended having to have its throat cut, only deer of mine that I've had to do because it taught me to practice more and for shots that might not be perfect. I've had to cut the throats of a couple deer for buddies that had a horrible shot for whatever ever reason. Not my favorite way to end a deer but better then letting em suffer. My uncle almost quit hunting after having to cut the throats of his 1st deer, glad he stuck with it or I might not be as dedicated as I am now.

Yeah somehow I find myself at 41 years old, can confirm.

I said something to someone the other day and they joked back “took you 50 years to figure that out?” Knocked me on my ass. :-(

Where does time go?

I have a friend who duck hunted for 26 years. Hasent hunted anything in 16yrs. Definitely not due to medical. Other hobbies come a long. I used to hunt our archery season until the bitter end (feb28th) but not this season I am burned out. I recently inherited a new hobby from my grandfather passing away and now I enjoy it more than hunting animals. To Each...

Couple older fellas in our camp have mostly quit hunting just to hang out at camp, cook, and drink beer. I'm not saying I'll get all the way there but I may get halfway there in a few decades. At 30 hunting is a lot of work sometimes. I don't think I would ever enjoy hunting out of fixed stands and ground blinds once my body starts to go.

I’am 72 and had a foot injury last year that may end my hunting as I have known it for years.I had to return my Kestral Saddle back to Aero Hunter for a refund that I never got too use.The people at Aero Hunter are a great and understanding bunch of people,I thank them for their understanding.I’am going to try to hunt again in 2020 but I will be limited to ground hunting and just how far I can walk ,but I’am going too try. Here is a picture of the foot I’am dealing with I sure hope I will be able to walk a little distance in to the woods.

Good Lord, can't imagine! Man I hope things work out for you. Do you mind sharing? I bet it's one heck of a story. As and aside, there's a brewery close to where I live, the owner is missing three toes and still manages to hunt from a stand. I asked him how he does it and he told me he wears a steel toed boot/shoe on that foot and a very stiff insole to provide stability. So maybe there's some hope, at least for ground hunting.

My dad quit hunting the year my grandfather passed, coincidentally the same year I got curious about hunting. He never would take or teach me no matter how much I asked. Not sure why as he never hunted with his father, it just seemed to take the life outta him.
I have a best friend that has severe ptsd and he hunts to get some solitude. I should say used to hunt, recently he quit as he said it just doesn't bring enjoyment any longer. Now he sits in the woods and just enjoys the peace and quiet and watching the animals.
Humans are an interesting bunch for sure.

Diabetes I take it? Looks pretty gnarly.

My grandfather was a hunting guide for a few years before moving the family to the city. My father never hunted or fished growing up but I was really into fishing and hiking. I didn’t discover hunting until a few years ago well into being an adult.

I wish hunting was a family tradition but I don’t see my kids getting into it. Part of it is their lack of interest and part of it is the fact they need to take the course and get licensed to do anything beside sit and watch me.

Make them take the test and drag their butts in the woods. They may be reluctant now but if they get older and want to do it on their own they won’t be in the dark. If and when they want to hunt they’ll look back on that time with you and be thankful you nudged them in right direction. I know I’m glad my dad took me when I didn’t want to go. I woulda missed some good times.

I have a buddy who didn't set foot in the woods this year. Pretty much he was a "first day" guy anyhow, but I think his fire is out. Once his Dad passed away, things really changed for him. Plus his wife is, well, a real treat.

That sux. I know a guy that's similar. His wife pretty much sucks the enjoyment out of it for him.
