the little debbie post got me thinking growing up my folks never bought name brand. there were so many things I'd beg for and get the generic equivalent and my dad would always say "its the same thing son with a different label"...

what are some off brand foods that in no way resemble the famed original?

my first thought was "Dr. Thunder". I'd ask for dr pepper and dad would bring home that Big K brand garbage.

I buy generic food brands all the time. Close enough and much cheaper.

Only name brand food I had as a kid was velveta. Apparently dad thought there wasn’t a suitable replacement.

We shop at Aldi when we can. Most of the store brand stuff is fine. But their “Doritos” aren’t the same. Their cereals are nearly identical IMO. I believe some things are just repackaged name brand items.
Agree 100%. I've never been able to find an acceptable substitute for Doritos, man those things are expensive now! Many store brands are just as good as the name brands.

Worked for a snack food company for 9 years. Many can make a chip every bit as good as Doritos. Nobody bothers because they dominate that market so hard.

Looks like someone would make an identical knockoff taste/product wise if it were feasible and sell it for less. I guess what I'm asking is does it just take more to make a Dorito be a Dorito, excluding advertising than it does to make a chip taste like a piece of cardboard with some red cheese dust on it?

Had a fraternity brother in college that would make the 3 hour run back home to Jersey to buy pallets of Kirkland beer. Our Costcos don't carry alcohol or at least didn't back then. I didn't think it was that great but a nice change up from Natty.

I buy bag cereal for the kids. I hate that I buy it since it has gotten so expensive and no real nutritional value. But it is cheaper. I can tolerate most of it. Cheerios, and raisin brand crunch are about the only two I can't settle on a replacement. But I only buy them on sale.
I won't buy the cheap ice cream. I draw the line some where.
Better made potato chips! Still made in Michigan Keep your Lays.
Off brand pretzels can be a hit or miss.
Off brand pop tarts taste like card board. But I think they are a tiny bit better for you. Less junk I think. At least the ones at our store.

This stuff is turning into the shame thread. Calling out all the garbage we buy!

I worked on the elevator in a chicken plant in the big town out our way. The place the chickens come in alive in cages on semi trailers and leave frozen in bags.

Upstairs was the boxes of plastic bags for packaging. Tysons and the Great value brand bags both were in the same room. Both brands were coming from the same place. I always thought it was funny. I wonder how many other food products are like that, just rebranded but from the same place.

Oreos, Hebrew National or Sabrett hot dogs, Hellman's mayo, Bumblebee Solid White Albacore in Water, Land O' Lakes White American, to list a few... HAHAHA! Generally speaking, most of the stuff we buy is generic, but there are a few things that "have" to be brand name!
