Ok guys....SUV or Crew Cab?

I finally settled on a 2017 f-150 with the 3.5. It’s an extended cab (or whatever fancy name they call it now) with 8 ft bed and matching cap. I was hesitant with the long bed and diving/parking. It’s less than a 10% difference. I might even be a long bed guy from now on. Having said that if I were you and you’re leaning towards a truck I’d go with a double cab with 6.5ft bed. It is a longer wheelbase like my truck but you aren’t going to Baja. I’m short and wife is so car seats can work with us and extended cab.
But with your height I’d want a double cab. I do think most of us can get away with 80% of our daily use with a double cab short bed.then a trailer for the occasional longer stuff. Or a bed extender. Or even a trailer hitch extender.
I was torn with an suv or truck. I’m happy with my purchase but everyone has different needs. Also part of my decision is that my mpg is right there with the 4 runner. Most of the v8s are nowmuch better with mpg as well.

I have had a lot of new vehicles due to my work, hands down the best truck I have ever owned is my toyota tundra, double cab, the only thing I will do different when I buy another one is get a new matching leer or ARE cap of some sort with canoe rack, I live in upstate NY with stupid amounts of road salt, I have my vehicles sprayed with Crown Oil rust preventative every spring, my truck is a 2012 with zero rust, the frame is still black, I used to buy brand new vehicles every 4 years before my tundra and Crown Oil treatments.
I had mine sprayed per your recommendation. I need to get a cap for the back though.

Transit AWD van.
Or...
I just got Quigley Transit 4x4. Perfect for a lot of uses.
Tons of space. I can camp in it, haul stuff, and go anywhere my truck could go.

mobile camp right there

I've got a 2012 Tundra short bed crew cab. The cab is super roomy. You'll love that with your height and young kids. The short bed will annoy you more than you want, but tradeoffs are inevitable. My kids are all but grown and gone so I'm leaning going back to extended cab and regular bed (with a cap) soon. Next truck.

I hear Nutter's argument about the concept of getting by without a truck for 90+% of needs. However, the brief period of my life that I didn't own a truck I loathed having to beg and borrow for those 10% needs. Kinda like the flip side of your trailer argument.

Tough call. Pros and cons to both.

Thanks...it'll kill me going to a short bed from an 8ft...I haven't had a truck without and 8ft since my 1992 for ranger...which I'm pretty sure had a 6.5.

Is.your Tundra the "crew cab" or "crew max"?

...man all these car terms are killing me....

I grew up with Toyota’s, but at 6’5” I have come to appreciate the room of a full size vehicle. I have a 2017 Ford Expedition EL 4x4. With both rows of rear seats folded flat it will hold a 4’x8’ sheet of plywood totally flat. I had a 3/2 leveling kit added and with 35” tires It has excellent clearance. It also doubles as my mobile hunting camp in the fall.

Wasn't thinking anything that big suv wise.....what do you get for mileage?

I've been a Toyota guy (Tacomas) for 20 years. So, I'm biased. I'd go 4runner or Tundra. Be sure to pick a more reliable year (not a year right after they made a major engine, etc change....the "generations".....for instance, latest Tacoma generation started in 2016).

I hear ya. I struggle with some of these cab distinctions. I think mine is the biggest/roomiest model, so I suppose that is crew max. The few times I've ridden in the back I can't believe how much space there is back there. You can haul a lot of gear (that you want secured) back there. I even tried sleeping there for one out of state hunt, but it wasn't an awesome night's sleep.

My first vehicle was an 88 Ford Ranger extra cab. Makes me laugh to think about my buddies riding around in those sideways rear jump seats!

2012 tundra crewmax, 189,000mi without issue so far. The only downfall is fuel mileage. You make a lot of that back in the long run having zero failures being a Toyota. Buy a beater Corolla and have the option for mileage when you need it. Basically pays for itself in fuel economy. I have had a full sized tundra and a commuter for the last decade and couldn’t be happier.

I had a 99 corolla...I put over 200k on it...it was extremely reliable!

Well...after my 2500 Hd had a run in with the mice of death whom ate all 3 main wiring harnesses in the box and my insurance company declared it totalled(with only like 80k on it!!!!!!). And now my suby has met its death with rust.....

I'm looking for a vehicle... needs to fit 2 front facing cars eats and have leg room for me at 6'4". Would prefer at least a standard bed if a truck...and a v8.

Thinking either crew cab truck with cap, or Toyota 4runner....
Thoughts? Go.....
Having just purchased two new vehicles, IMO the 4runner isn't big enough for you and I'm only 6'2". I ended up with a Traverse (roomiest SUV we found besides going to something like a Tahoe, Mrs wanted something easier to park than the Tahoe we drove) and a Crew Cab Sierra. I kept my 06 Tundra (hunting truck) which will keep miles off the new Sierra and keep it nice longer.

You like the Sierra? I'm found a couple reasonable priced crew cabs Round.. but both my father and fil had issues with the 4x4 controller switch on the past(turn know style) but they're a little older.

Haven't had mine long enough to know about those kinds of issues but I just sold my 2007 Sierra 2500 diesel in order to get the new one, never had any issues with that one as far as 4x4 goes. I did find the 5.3L a little under powered so I went with the 6.2L gas. It seems the most popular engine is the small inline 6 cylinder diesel engine (3.0 maybe). Good thing about the Sierra over say a Tundra, is you can get a longer bed (three sizes). I had a 2010 Tundra crewmax and though I loved it, I hated that tiny short bed (can only get a longer bed on the double cab Tundra). I'm sure a Tundra will last longer since they don't do all this engine detuning when the power isn't needed, auto stop (most annoying thing on the planet) etc.

Yeah, my 2006 2500hd was great. It had the push button 4x4.... it was the vortec v8.

I hate to say it, but it may be a time in my life a short bed just "works"....it will drive me nuts, bit rhe kids might not be kicking me in the back when I'm driving. Getting lumber in a shortbed sucks, especially if it's a mix of ply and 2x.

I'm also a big proponent of why get a smaller engine...the rest of the truck is built to house the larger engine too....so you end up with a smaller engine working harder to push the same vehicle...
