One Stick Climbing: To Rappel or not Rappel

Do you Rappel after one stick climbing to make your descent?

  • I use a different climbing method

  • I one stick climb but have never tried rappelling

  • I one stick climb and have tried rappelling but don't care for it

  • I one stick climb but only rappel under certain conditions

  • If I one stick climb I'm rappelling down

Here’s my video on rappelling using a super munter. One stick, no extra hardware. Not as safe but fast, light, and cheap. See part one for my ascent.

Very cool! Super Munter! I like it. The only thing I didn't like is you don't have two hands available to take steps and gear off the tree etc. but that is slick.

Not to be a downer but that looks super dangerous. What happens if your hand comes of the rope? Will that knot catch you?

You could use regular munter hitch and you could use your prusik cord as an autoblock on your linesman loop. Wouldn't require extra hardware and would allow you to have a backup.

I really appreciate all the videos. I am slowly getting into the saddle game and have been trying to decide how to climb. I think it is narrowed down to pre set bolts on private land and 1 stick rappel on public/private run and gun. Tjutte your videos helped out alot with nailing it down.

I’d like to try one sticking, but I feel I watch one too many people introducing a lot of slack into their tether and then the rappel video in this made me cringe. Idk if it’s right or wrong and it still freaked me out

anyone have any good videos they could recommend?
Post here or message me please!

Nah brother I’m glad you brought that up. It IS kind of dangerous, and I’m working out a plan to make it safer. If you let go, you will fall at almost freefall speed. Only having one hand to grab my stick sucks, I think an autoblock will be where I end up.

Hard to move from linemans to tether without getting slack, especially with such a long bridge and a munter. If you had a shorter bridge, ATC or figure 8, and some light static rope you could probably have a smoother transition. I know what you’re saying, rappelling off of a cliff with all that slack would be sketchy as hell

The prusik on my lineman’s is 550 cord, i tried that and it binds up too much wont slide well. Need some thicker diameter rope or a sewn runner.

Also need to start hitching my linemans on the carabiner as a backup to the 550 when I’m coming off of my tether, hard to trust my life with 550. A clove hitch will be fast and easy

550 cord for a prusik that you may fall on is a bad idea. The super Munter seems OK to me as a backup but not for EDC. Why not use proper equipment for EDC (every day climbing)?

Just made a video on my single stick but the back half got cut off. I use a munter hitch to rappel

You need to go onto Dano's website (https://doublesteps.com) and get this Kong quick triangle link https://doublesteps.com/product/kong-quick-link-triangle-8mm/. I have the petzl and the ratings are the same. Don't have to worry about cross loading your carabiner when your 25'+ up the tree.
Specifications:
Major Axis: 60kN
Minor Axis: 30kN
Weight: 155g

I do the exact same method and love it.

Ok...while you are on Dano's website, get some 6mm sterling TRC for your prussic on your lineman's belt. I'd recommend two 3.5' sections of TRC. https://doublesteps.com/product/sterling-6mm-trc/ That way you can tie it into a distel or schwabisch hitch and not have to worry about it binding. Now...for your rappel...Let me also recommend the madrock safeguard. https://doublesteps.com/product/mad-rock-safeguard/. The second length of rope would also be a distel tied on your right and attached beneath your safeguard. That way you have two handed decent and if you need to stop and take down gear you can use both hands and the autoblock is a secondary safety measure.

Your video gives me chills. Please be careful. All it takes is one slip up.

Had some accessory cord laying around, cut it into a prussic. Now, this goes above my munter, connect to my bridge on a parallel carabiner or on my linemans belt?

That's a regular munter hitch with a backup. Good option for a backup I would recommend a real belay device but this way you will have a backup. I used a klemheist knot because a prusik doesn't seem to work well for this application in my experience.

Hi guys I’m new to saddle hunting and just wanted to know which rope to get for rappelling. What I’ve learned from here is 50’ length is a good length. But rope and rope size I’m still confused. I’m from Canada and all the rope I look at here is 40M and up. I was looking at Beal Rando 8mm Golden Dry Rope from MEC. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am from Ontario. Just order fromEastern Woods outdoors. Often no duty with USPS.
