Opening Day Gun in PA

Oh the one that used to really irritate me is putting in the leg work for someone to set up 50-60 yards from me. Like dude I whistled you waved to me and you still proceeded to sit down.

Had this happen to yrs back when I didn’t hunt game lands and when I confronted the guy he said “well I’ve been hunting here for 20 yrs”

You should have known better. He shot a spike there 30 years ago with his turdy-turdy. That's been HIS spot ever since. Shame on you for assuming public land was public. :tearsofjoy:

Saw a spike in front of me. Suddenly a shot blasts down the hill. Deer falls over (illegal to shoot except junior licenses). Guy walks up, inspects *lack of antlers, promptly walks out of the woods. Wearing neon green. Dad chases after him, asking you gonna call in this deer or what? Guy feigns ignorance. Dad says, you’re the only guy out here wearing neon green… #HuntingPA

Parking lot packed. Pickup truck tearing up and down service road 5 mins before shooting time. Guy crash lands it in the ditch (no parking spot), slams doors, honk-beep locks it, and runs in the woods 100 yards from me.

Hunting carefully, quietly in super stealth mode. Then comes a whole family out to walk the dog, talking at the top of their lungs.

That's usually the guy that lucks into one right away and ends up back at the camp by 9:30 AM drinking Busch Apples and telling everyone what a great hunter he is...

“Still dark out. Got to spot early to beat the crowd. Getting gear out of truck with headlamp. One lone shot rings out in the darkness a mile away. Did you shoot yourself? Are you poaching? Seriously, what was that?... #HuntingPA”

I always figured it was someone loading their old lever action and had their finger on the trigger

Or tried to let the hammer down with gloves on and got a surprise. Hope you were minding your muzzle.

Everyone that has hunted in PA for any significant length of time had heard that shot, because you knew EXACTLY what I was talking about when I described it. It's both hilarious and very, very concerning... :tearsofjoy:

I've heard that shot almost every opening day I've hunted. And it's always far off in the distance lol. Really makes you wonder *** is going on.

Hike 1.5 miles back into the very end of public near the PA border, get set up 30 min before daylight only to have 5 guys ride their ATV’s right up to the State line 5 min after daylight and walk in talking loudly to each other.

Actually that was me, in that instance. :tearsofjoy: He basically spooked em right towards me. I had barely loaded my gun for shooting time before one walked up and I shot it just about point blank

Yes. It’s uncanny and local-culture hilarious and disturbing all at once.

Marmuzz - 5B was very busy for me in archery this year, more so than previous years. Consider yourself lucky

Well I hunted the second weekend after the hurricane rain. Idk if all the serious bow killers got out there in the wet or did it asap midweek after the skies cleared. It was weird man, I thinking to myself this is what I’ve been missing all these years?!

I'm happy guys are out hunting but PA is frustrating. I own a small piece and only bow hunt. It's crazy the crap you have to deal with... People will watch for when you are gone and try to drive it during gun season, if they see a stand or camera they'll probably take it (cell cams have helped in this regard)
Drives start at 9 on opening day and run for 2 weeks but if you talk to a lot of locals they complain there are no deer and especially no big deer.
The quality of deer is getting better but I think it's mainly because people are getting lazy.
The ol' "if I don't shoot my neighbor will" line is getting a little stale at this point. I got family an hour away in MD and it's nothing to see a few bucks in a sit in November and 2-3 will be 2 + yrs old. I do believe the PA game comission has done a really great job improving things over the last 20 yrs

Just finished the second day of gun camp tonight. 21 hunters across 1000 acres private and not 1 big buck down yet. Seen plenty of tiny bucks. This time last year we 7 big ones down. Looking ugly this year. Warm weather hasn't helped either

I drove past a smaller game lands near me. 150-200 acres and there was an overflowing parking lot and cars parked on the road. I counted 21 cars and 3 Amish vans, so that is a minimum of 30 people. Thats small enough you had to have been able to see hunters in all directions.

Lol you guys are hilarious and unfortunately accurate. I was up in Pike county for the weekend, I didn't hunt but the orange army was out in force all around us

Talk to a guy in the parking lot. Says he shot a buck. Drops tailgate to reveal tiny 3 point half rack. Says sometimes he likes to come up to camp to shoot these little mountain bucks even though he has giant bucks by his house in Pittsburgh. Shows me trail cam photos of enormous 10s and 12s... #HuntingPA

Guy in parking lot brags about taking a deer with his new gun. Shows me yearling doe shot through both shoulders with a 300 win mag. Enjoy your purple meat jelly... #HuntingPA

Van full Amish get out. Four of them have guns. The rest have pots and pans... #HuntingPA
And they have 30 tags among 4 hunters, quite a few of which have wives and daughters names on them..... #HuntingPA
