permethrin alternatives

So this popped up on bowhunting.com dunno if it's any good but it has Picaridin.

www.provenrepellent.com
Picaridin can store it in a cool, dry place; to put it delicately. I tried a bottle of it and it sucks for mosquitoes, gnats, and flies. I have a hard time believing it would do better for ticks. Smells like synthetic oranges though, which is more pleasant than DEET.

I rarely go in the woods without permethrin on my clothing. Stuff plain works.

Once the skeeters come out I also run DEET. If I am sitting and its warm, a thermacell is almost always with me too. If the deer flies are thick, I will also put some Vicks Vapor rub on the brim of my heat, sometimes on my knuckles.

I had to look up what permethrin was. I'm so glad to be in Idaho. I see a tick once or twice a decade, usually on the dog.

They got jobs there? Lol! You ain’t lived until you pick up a couple hundred ticks and a leg or two of chiggers

No kidding right! A leg full of tick or chigger bites can make a man consider chewing his own leg off rather than tolerate those devilish little pests...

Yeah...Researchers examined thousands of possum turds and found a high quantity of tick remains.
How would you like to have THAT job...picking thru possum crap to look for ticks?
Since I learned about how many ticks they kill, I've come to love possums.

That's horrible news. Possums are nest predators and have been known to have a big negative impact on turkeys but......they eat ticks.

To kill or not to kill.

Coons are the worst nest predators.
Our area has tons of possum. They are slaughtered on the roads everywhere. But our turkey population is beyond healthy. We have turkey up the wazoo. Possum don't seem to be having much of a negative impact on turkeys around my place.

I had Lyme disease back in the mid 90's before it was even known to exist in my area. Had the classic signs and also the blood test came back positive. Took me years to overcome the symptoms...Don't play around with ticks!

I use permethrin religiously on my clothing and it works very well. One year I decided to save some money and try the kind you use on animals from the local tractor supply store..this was based on some comments obtained from other forums....I noticed it had a pretty strong smell to it but thought it would go away in a few days....the smell got better but I didn't't see a deer at all for something like the first 8 sits that season...I rarely go hunting without seeing deer so this was very unusual for me...stopped using that type of permethrin and started seeing deer again...I'm just saying....lol

I use Sawyers brand and deer do not smell it....It also works very well on mosquitos.....

It’s interesting, Texas Parks and Wildlife is finding a direct correlation between good coyote populations and recovering quail and turkey populations. They find that without enough coyotes, your possum and raccoon populations get high enough that nest predation exceeds the reproductive capacity of the birds.

It’s kinda counterintuitive, but in much of Texas (at least) if you want quail and turkey start letting coyotes walk. Now, your fawn recruitment will take a hit... so it is a balancing act.

I had lymes disease a few years back , I ended up in hospital with it . I was hallucinating with a temperature over 103 f , it took a good 18 months to get back anywhere near normal. You guys sitting on the fence on whether to use permethrin just be sensible and follow the instructions

Our neighbors chickens kept disappearing and everybody, including me, thought it was coons but after putting a trail camera on the coop it turned out to be a possum

Similar thing happened to us. I had the opportunity to take my wife with me while on travel for work last year. We were leaving for two weeks and had to decide whether to leave the coop open and let our chickens forage or leave them shut up and hope they didn't initially gorge on the food pile and then die of starvation before we returned. Well... we had 18 carcasses strewn around our backyard when we got home. Sure wish I had read yalls insight into possums being tick eaters prior to coming back from that trip because I spent the next few days extinguishing the unfortunate possums that got caught in paw traps before finally nabbing the fox I had on the game camera. Dern.

I've used permethrin for the past couple seasons and feel confident that there's no remaining odor when dry. Deet on the other hand has an undeniable odor that lasts. For the deet users, are we saying that deer don't associate it with humans? I.e., it's OK to spray yourself with deet just before hitting the woods?

DEET might work but I would never apply it directly to my skin - largest organ of the body. While true it might not effect us short term - IMO that crap does build up in the liver and kidneys over time.

On a different front - there are now two studies that show that mosquitos can carry the bacteria that cause lymes. I do not even want to guess how many skeeter bites I get in a year. They have not proven it will transfer from mosquito to human----- yet but it thought to be possible. I have two friends that have been devastated by lymes.
I had a bite on my upper arm were I could see the area were I thought a mosquito bit me . It itched and then I got a bullseye around it with a bad headache. I went to the doctors and had blood tests and I had Lyme disease . Thank God it was caught early and it was acute a bunch of antibiotics and all is well. I have heard that it could be carried by mosquitoes. I not sure that's what happened to me but I know I felt a bit and acutely slapped my arm like a mosquito bite me. Just be careful and spray down and check your self and especially children.

A question to the people who have contracted lyme or other disease......I've always read that even if your bitten by an infected tick it takes roughly 24 hours for the bacteria/virus to transfer to humans. Is this true? What did the doctors tell you? Ive had easily over 100 ticks in my life but i always check myself and always get them off the same day.

Weldabeast - the 24 hour thing is what I've been told too....Back when I contracted lyme there was a lot less info than there is now about it. Luckily I'm very proactive with my medical stuff and did the research to find out what I needed to do as far as meds. My original doctor prescribed 10 days of antibiotics but was out of town when I researched and found you need to take them longer but luckily the on-call doctor extended the antibiotics.
