Personal Carry Solutions

First day bowhunting this year had a sow black bear and 3 cubs walk about 60 yards by my tree. Felt very happy to have 15 rounds in my glock and also very scared I only had 15 rounds in my glock. And yeah we got sketchy folks too. My number one goal is going home alive

Absolutely!

I have the runners kit bag and the heavy recon. I tried the bino harness on the front of the recon and do not care for it when saddle hunting. I prefer the runners kit bag with a rock young style harness overtop.

Note that if I were in grizzly country my choices would be different...I'd be rocking a kydex chest holster instead.

Grizzly country …not gonna lie, that would test my resolve. I usually don’t do well at things on my 1st try and I’m not sure a Griz would cut me some slack

I bought something like this one (looks identical, but I got it from Amazon) years ago. It’s perfect for saddle hunting.

I am carrying my personal handgun in and I haven’t got a good solution yet. If I wear my backpack with a dump pouch I can put it in there but when I want to go in light I use an inside waste holster. But wearing my saddle in and that IWC don’t get along.

Wondering how you guys carry into the woods while wearing your saddle?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Marsupial Gear makes small and large holsters that have a snap. The small fits Glock g19 and smaller handguns. The large looks like it's for medium frame revolvers. It snaps right over the waist belt on my pack. I didn't want to trust a snap to hold my gun, so I backed up with a loop of amsteel (actually zingit I believe). There's loops on the back of the holster that you can feed that amsteel through. That way, if I comes unsnapped then the amsteel loop catches the holster. I've used this all season and it works great.

The small fits my Kahr CM9 and also S and W M and P 45 acp.

This video is my experience last season. I had 3 cubs come by right to left and then the sow came by, once she got down wind and caught my scent, she came back and eventually right to the base of my tree. At that point I called out to her and she got super pissed. You can't see it in the video (as I was otherwise occupied), but she raised up on her hind legs and slammed the ground with both her front paws and basically told me I should never sneak up on her again. Actions starts around 1:40 and ends about 2:00

I had a similar experience experiencing 30 years ago in Ca except I was on the ground. If I would have extended my arms I would have hit her in the nose. I had to go to camp for some dry clothes!

I just got the Kenai and got it adjusted and I think I am really going to like this holster. It distributes the weight very well. I'm not a big guy and with just a North Face vest on over it, the full size 10mm all but disappears. The purpose of it is not for concealed carry but that is just a plus.

I'm going to get out in a few minutes and practice some bow shots with it on from the saddle. I'll report back when I know more.

Very fast too.

Yes, I'm happy to say we don't have enough of those around here to worry about. I have only seen one in the woods in my life. Hogs and coyotes are really the thing around here on four legs to worry about and they can't climb.

My gawd!

I know, right!?!?!?!

I saw a similar video of a grizzly chasing a black bear and that bear climbed the tree like that. It's insane. Makes me think twice about taking sardines for my lunch snack to the tree lol.

Just ordered the GFI Kenai. Plan to upgrade binos before turkey season and plan to go with marsupial rig. I don’t like the idea of their holster on the bottom of bino rig. Rather have it under. 4-5 week turn around for custom. Have plenty of time to get used to it before fall.

I took the 10 out for a walkabout today in the woods. This was the first real test of the Kenai holster. I could hardly tell that I had it on. Those pigs better be on their best behavior. I missed a doe at about 17 yards with the longbow, but that is another story (official ground hunting thread) if you're interested. Fun hunt!

Yes, and I'm not a big guy. I wear a small in a polo if that gives you an idea. I had the rig on with the 10mm messing around the house with when I got it and had it on under a North Face vest and I asked my wife if she could tell I was carrying, and she said no.
